Try running a search on this topic as its been beaten to death on more than one occassion. Click the link in my sig line and you should fine plenty of good reading info for your desired topic. If you find a bolt-gun thread on .308 barrel lengths...the same basic premises apply, so don't ignore it just because it is limited to a bolt action system.
The long and the short of it (pun intended) is that the optimum barrel length will depend on what you need/want to do with the rifle, what ranges you plan on using it, what bullets you want to push (and the velocities/performance you want/need from them), etc., etc.

GA Precision GAP-10 with an 18" to 20" barrel. the accuracy they have been getting out of these is outstanding. lowlight just posted a review on his that George just completed and reading his review made me very happy on my decision to order a GAP-10.

I like my Armalite, Knight's Armament are real nice if you have the cash, ether will hold their resale value.

I shoot an LWRC REPR with 20" bbl 1/10 twist. With handloads using 168 SMK I get .5" groups.

No clue why JP doesn't get talked about much?? I have a JP LRP 07 and it's the best "AR type" rife I've ever owned or shot by far.

Also consider Les Baer custom, particularly the Monolith. Sub .5MOA, available in a variety of barrel lengths with and without integral brake. I've got an 18" with brake and it too is a tack driver

Any Laru Tactical OBR will drive tacks out of the box. 16, 18 and 20" bbl lengths. I have shot them all and would go with the 18" as an all around gun.

JP, Les Baer, Gap, Larue, Pof, Noveske, etc etc etc all good. Tons of good makes out there.
You really ought to say how much $$$$$ you can afford to spend otherwise we're going to pick for you and you'll be in the poorhouse pretty quick.
