Wondering what you guys think. I'm not even sure it's possible, but I'm going to have to send my scope in to get a rounded allen head screw extracted from the elevation knob (I didn't do it!!!).

Wondering if they can, and if so I should, go with the M1 1/4 moa elevation and windage knobs? I'm sure for what I want to do (punch paper, target, hunt, etc.) it'll be better that way, but just asking.

I like the look of the M3, but functionally and precision wise the M1's look much better.

Let me know what you think.

Kyle

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I think it costs about 150$ to have them swapped out. The scope is probably worth 6-7bills so might be cheaper to sell it and simply buy a used one with the m1 knobs...

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I can't hardly sell it with the rounded out Allen screw though...that's my problem, lol. Wonder if they would just replace that pretty cheap and keep my knobs as is?

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

It sounds like a great choice. I am an M1 guy myself so I understand why you are doing it but the screw thing may be a problem. However all leapolds have a lifetime waranty so you may have something there. Good luck.

That's probably what I'll do. Surely they'll be able to fix it?

It's one of the three screws that locks the turrets onto the scope.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

So if I have m3 turrets can I get it changed out to m1s?

Pretty sure you can, no problem.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

My elevation is one moa and wind is .5moa

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

send it in to leupold, they will fix it. It is a relatively simple fix, it happens all the time.

As far as changing out the adjustments, your call but it will cost about $150 or so. As others have said, see if you can just pick up a used one from somewhere and sell the other or keep it, never hurts to have a spare laying around.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

This would be good. Getting tired of holding .5moa at 1k

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

You might consider a change to M5's instead with 0.1 mil clicks (assuming you have a mil-based reticle). Just saying...

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

OP. Sorrry to hijack your post. Yes I have milldots. I don't thank leupold will do m5s in a vrix3 LR/T.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Check the website, you cannot do m3 to m1 or vice versa. You can see why if you pay close attention to thr turret construction.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I will look into that. I hate weekends. All the cool places I want to talk to are closed.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

No problem 0481 I need to ask the same stuff.

I'd really be interested in going with the M5 knobs, but I guess that's not possible? If not I'll just have to get the M3's fixed and sell it. It's in perfect condition.

Sly are you sure they can't? I've been reading on their website and can't find where it says that. All I can find is that the hunting style scopes can only get target or m1 turrets, but nothing about not being able to get the M1's or 5's with an original M3.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Well dang, good question! I recall checking this out awhile back (about 2 years) and they indicated it was a no due to the physical difference in how each turret is made (note that the M1 and M5 are physically the same as are M2 and M3). I do see it's nowhere on the site now, so I'd call to make sure. Don't trust my 56 year old hayseed memory! Heck, I'm lucky to find my way to work every day.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

LOL I'm not saying you're wrong at all! I don't have any idea and can see how much different they are, but it depends if that tall part on the M1 turrets are part of the scope body or the turret itself. I can't hardly tell. I'll definitly call and see.

What's the M2 all about? 1/2 MOA elevation?

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I have a mark 4 10x lr and had the reticle changed to tmr. Spoke to them in changeing to m3. They said was not possible.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

What knobs do u have now?

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Well I've been searching ang got this from another site:

Quote:

Leupold is now offering the M5 (milrad) conversion on specific Mark 4 scopes. According to their product specialists, they can do the conversion on the following Mark 4 scopes:

ER/T
LR/T (3.5-10x only)

The conversion costs about $90 which includes return shipping as far as I can tell. Leupold received two of my scopes today so I should have them back in a couple of weeks.

Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M1 Front Focal TM Reticle
Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M3 Illum. TM Reticle

According to this I may be in business!!

0481 yours and mine are the same...Let me know if you talk to Leupold tomorrow. I'll do the same...incase one doesn't get ahold of them.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I tried to get them to change my MOA turrets for Mil turrets on an older MarkIII Tactical and they said they couldn't.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

If anyone happens to get ahold of Leupy please ask them for me!! lol.

I've called a few times and I'm now 18 in line and 67 minutes wait time...wow!!

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Well had a little free time and talked to a guy at Leupold. He told me they couldn't do the M5's on the older models (prior to the M5 knob model period, I'm guessing 2010?)yet, and wasn't sure when it would be available. He said he didn't want to even guess. Could be 3 months could be 2 years.

He did however tell me that they could put both the M1 and M2 on my model.

If I went with the M2 it would be $89.99 because they would only have to change the elevation turret. The M1's would be $129.99, because it's both knobs that need to be replaced.

So now to decide if I want 1/4 or 1/2.

I would just go ahead and sell it, get another, etc, but don't know if all that hassle is worth $100. Then I'll get a used one with some sort of problems, IE stripped set screw, etc.

What do you guys think? Does it sound like the tech knew what was up? He really sounded more like a sales/customer service guy than a tech person.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Cool let me know what they say. I'd like to confirm they can't do the M5's. I've read alot about the people answering the phones not knowing exactly what to tell people.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I just got off the phone with the coustom shop. A veri x 3 T/LR WITH M3 elevation and m2 windage can not be upgraded to m5 turrets at this time. How ever I can get the m1 turrets. Lead time is 4 weeks. And 129.99.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Exactly what they told me. I think I'm going to send mine in for the M1's. I'd like to wait on the M5, but who knows how long that will take???

Thanks for he update.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Yea I hear ya. I will send mine in after the new year. When I don't have the time to shoot.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Good info, thanks for checking. See, I told you guys I didn't know what I was talking about.

No problem. It's all good. You said it was awhile back. It may be just like I can't get the M5's right now, and you couldn't get the M1's back then. Maybe in a year or so I can.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Overall I like the look/feel of the M3 turrets, but wish has finer grain adjustments like the M1's. As for the rounded set screw.. hit your hardware store for a stuck screw remover tool and pickup another set screw while there.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I also like my m3. Just wish it was .5 moa.

I just called Leupold.
The CS guy checked with technical services and this is the official word:

They can put M5 knobs on Mk4 scopes that are 3.5-10x only and only ones made in 2008 and after. Unfortunately my scope is a 2006. There are no plans to be able to modify pre-2008 scopes at this time.

0481. The M2 knob looks identical to the M3, but is .5 MOA and only $89.99 to do because they only replace the elevation. Why are you wanting .5 and not .25 moa? Just curious as I need to decide as well.

I tried to get the screw out and it's not working! I've tried lefty bits, easy out, etc.

Thanks for the additional info from Leupold! I'm glad to know that I'm not messing up sending it off for new knobs and requesting M1's or m2.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

GOT SOME CONFLICTING INFO FROM LEUPOLD!

Well when I first asked this question and got some suggestions on the M5 turrets I sent an email. It was over the weekend and got to call them Monday to see what they had to say.

Today I finally got an email back from them explaining that it was definitley possible to switch my M3 to M5 turrets as long as I had a Mark 4.

So I called to confirm once again and specifically asked the guy if the date of manufacture mattered? He said, "No that has nothing to do with it as long as it's a MK4," I told him mine was a 2004 model and he said, "yeah no problem at all".

When I sent it in I sent a letter stating I wanted M5 knobs, but would take M1's if that's all I could get.

So either the few people we've talked to thought we were talking about a VX or something else, or these people I talked to have no idea what they are talking about...or visa versa.

Either way I guess we'll see just wanted to pass along the Info.

Oh they also told me over email it would be $98 and over the phone he said it was $129.99........quite a mystery...

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I'm intersted in switching my mk4 4.5-14 over to m5 turrets as well. I'm trying to switch everything to mil/mil. It would definitely be worth $130 to switch rather than sell an buy something else

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I have been considering switching out the M1 knobs on my MK4 3.5-10 so I can have the mil/mil consistency since math has never been my strongpoint.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I just sent in my 6.5-20x40 VXIII to have target knobs installed. I waited a week after it was delivered by UPS and email Leupold CS, took them 3 days to reply that the didn't receive my scope. Emailed him back with my tracking number and he never replied back. So I filled a claim with UPS but they will probably tell they can't do anything about it, cause it was delivered and I will have to contact the receiver. If I was to sent a scope to leupold again, I would think hard about it first. No lifetime warrent if you don't have it.

KPK your right, I just got a call from them. Leupold GTG.

That's a bummer man. I shipped mine and according to the tracking # it made it Friday. Hopefully they got it!!!

I bet you'll get a call soon. When I call it sounds like know one really knows what's going on...lol

Same thing happened to me when I asked for them to change the knobs on a Vari X III from MOA to mils, email confirmed that they could.

Can anyone point me to some info on the M3, M5, etc. nomenclature?

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Yup their allen screws are really soft metal.
I didn't have the right allen wrench in the field one time and I thought i could get by.
Figured there wouldn't be that much tension on it.
I now have a rounded off screw.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

If you cannot make up your mind on the M1 or the M3 and you cannot get the M5 I would go with the M2 1/2moa. Looks like the M3.

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

Well got a call today! The lady confirmed that the the M5's couldn't be done...so I went ahead with the M1's. I think the finer adjustment will be fine as it will match my NF.

She said to stand by and it should be shipped by the end of the week to early next week!!! Pretty good response, and very quick!

Re: Sending my scope to Leupold: M3 knobs for M1s?

I just called Leupold today at 1740 EST regarding converting my M1 turrets on my 4.5x14 ER/T and 8.5x25 ER/T to M5 turrets. Leupold advised they can not do any conversions at this time but should be able to start by Jan 2012. I was told to call back at that time and "they should be able to help me". Maybe if enough people call and bug them enough they will hurry up! I don't want a new scope but I would definitely like the MIL turrets.
