Serial number questions.

Hope this is the right place for this question. Want to find info about a Rem. 700. Im buying a rifle that I know but the person doesnt have the original box. Is there a place online I can find the specifics about this rifle from its serial number? I know I can call Remington, but if there is a faster way I'd like to try it. Thanks for your replies.

What are you wanting to know- original specs or year of manufacture?

Thanks for the reply. I know its was bought new in 2000 or 2001 but i dont know the specifics of the rifle. It has been shot about 25 times and been a safe queen. He doesnt remember the specifics either.
