92gr H1000
Lapua Brass
Fed 215 primers
C.O.L. 3.700" but experimenting with longer
2817fps Measured at the muzzle (magnetospeed)

1/2MOA at 100 yards and I am guessing that at 1000, been hitting a 8" plate at that range. Not had a chance for anything longer.

Awesome guys! Thanks for sharing. I'm gonna have to try the H1000 300gr load. Anyone have any luck with a 300gr(.338lm) load using RL-22? I traded a bunch of my RL-25 for RL-22 a while back and am wondering if that was a mistake...It seems like a lot of people like H1000.

RL-25 was my go to powder for .338LM and .408CT for a number of years, but around 2010 I started noticing variance from lot to lot, so I started looking elsewhere. In the .338LM, H1000 is a decent alternative though I didn't settle on a good 250 Scenar load. N560 had awesome performance and while I was able to push the 250s faster with less pressure, it seemed to foul the bore excessively. Since I moved to New Zealand, I started experimenting with AR2225, which is pretty much Retumbo, and while I haven't found the right load for 250s, the low 90s seems to work really well on the Hornady 285s. I haven't finalized a load yet but 92-93gr seems close.

What COALs are you guys using with your 300gr .338LM loads?

FWIW, when I was testing 300 Scenars I was using the same COAL as the 250s: 3.681" The magazines are long enough that you can still seat them pretty far, with the most I ever pushed them out to was 3.78"

Well after testing my 44.5gr varget/178gr Amax load I am pretty discontent. The best I could get it to group was 1.5in at 100yds. Was shooting from a bench and setup was solid as a rock. Don't know what went wrong. Back to the drawing board.

Anyone had better luck with a particular bullet weight in .308? Some real good responses in here. Think I might try a load using 155gr Nosler custom competition BTHPs. I see some varying COALs in here, has anyone measured their .308 chamber? What COAL has worked the best for the majority of you guys?

6.5X47 lapua- Lapua Brass, 120gr SMK, 39.3gr of RL15 in a 26" barrel seems to work very well. I think COAL is 2.705 if I recall correctly.

.338BR Rem 7mmBR brass necked up to .338, 300gr SMK, 13gr of 2400 in 17" barrel gives about 1050fps and good accuracy. Incredibly quiet suppressed.

.338LM, Lapua, Hornady or Privi brass, 250SMK, 96-97gr of IMR5010 gives 2800-2850fps and good accuracy. Load varies slightly with different brass. Privi is lowest capacity, lapua highest. Good accuracy and low fouling. COAL is 3.745" in the DT. Still fits the mags fine.

.510 whisper/12.7X48, lapua or hornady brass cut down and neck turned, US BMG API 650gr, 28.5gr of 2400 or 29gr of 4227 give about 1050fps and reasonable accuracy with military bullets. Pretty quiet suppressed.

I should note that only the .338LM barrel is a DT factory barrel. All the others were done by me using DT barrel extensions and PacNor stainless blanks. The reamers for the .338BR and the 12.7X48 were obtained from PTG and the reamer for the 6.5X47 Lapua is a Dave Manson. That could affect the overall lengths etc.....

What is the most amount of H1000 you guys have been putting behind a 300gr bullet(.338 Lapua)? I've been using the load below and it's been very accurate and pretty fast. I am seeing some ejector marks on the bottom of the base/rim. No flattened primers or stiff bolt. Max is 92.2 of H1000 in the Sierra manual. What say you guys, should I back it down some or am I GTG?

300gr SMK

Does anyone have any loads for 16" covert barrels?

have had similar luck with 42.5 gr h4350 in SAC 6.5 CM DTA barrel - 26" , 1:8

sub 2" 5-shot groups at 500yds

What kind of speeds are you getting with the shorter barrels?

That's odd, I use nearly the same load and it's more than 100fps slower than that. I'm measuring 10ft from muzzle but I wouldn't think it would lose that much that soon.

Now that is something to be proud of!

Has anyone tried to push heavier bullets like the 208gr Amax out of the faster twist 16" covert barrels? For that matter, does anyone have some subsonic loads for that barrel?

Still would be curious to know if anyone has used the 110gr Vmax or 208gr Amax in their 16" covert barrels(1-8 twist).

Wow, that's quite the jump. I usually seat mine to 2.845.

I took out my 16" .308 and tried my load from the OP(178gr Amax w/44.5grs Varget). It really didn't do too well. About 1.25 OAL if not worse. I have some 175gr SMKs I think I might try out. Russ said the Covert barrels seem to like that bullet.

Anyone else have any ideas for .308 loads?

I have been playing with 175 and 178's this week over RL15. Seems to like 43. Gr. Will know more after this week but so far looking good.

I want to try .308 175 SMK's but I can't get my hands on any.
So I did get some Berger VLD Hunting 168 Grain.

Yeah, I probably have that wrong (my .308WIN barrel and log book for it are in the States at the moment). It does jump, but not by much.

I'm gonna load some of these up tonight. I know you don't measure COAL via the tip of the bullet, but i don't have the means to measure from the ogive. Do you know approximately what the COAL would be from the tip?

Nice thing about my range is that we have a highpower building where I can plug my RCBS chargemaster in and use a Lee hand press to seat bullets. I'll find a load for this damn rifle if it's the last thing i do.

New conversion en route and is looking mighty promising.

That's a very anomalous situation and very unlucky for you, Creature. Every single one of my DTA barrels shoots under 1MOA and the most common thing people say after they get an SRS is "I had no idea this rifle was so accurate." There's quite a bit of that in the big DTA thread. Out of curiosity, have you shot their DTM ammo in your rifle? I did some testing of their 300gr .338LM and 175 .308WIN ammo and performed better than the Lapua factory ammo (if I recall correctly).

Have you tried commercial ammo? FGMM? I would load to 2.800" COAL and see what it does.

I don't have my chassis yet but I do have a 16" barrel. I measured the chamber using a Hornady OAL Gauge. I'll post my measurements tonight.

I just finalized my 6.5x47L load over the weekend. Seating the bullets out a bit farther and switching primers brought the groups down from just under 1MOA to pretty much all stacked up on top of each other.

DTA Factory barrel 26" @ 1:8.5"

136 ScenarL
Lapua Brass
CCI 450 Magnum Primer
40gr N550
2.755" COAL

My 16" DTA 308 Barrel measures with:

168gr Amax
COAL: 2.845"
Ogive: 2.213"

178gr Amax
COAL: 2.856
Ogive: 2.223

208gr Amax
COAL: 2.991
Ogive: 2.232

Ok guys I have a 22.5" SAC .338 Lapua en route to me. Any one out there have a good starting load for the shorter barrel?

Notice temp sensitivity above 85 degrees F. Dropped Load to 68 grns and maintained better accuracy. 5 shots inside a dime at 100 yds.

Well my Berger 185gr Jeggernauts are supposed to be here by the weekend. Anyone having luck launching these pills out of their .308 SRS? I'm going to be using Varget because that's what I have on hand but does anyone have alternate suggestions?
