OK guys .. please bear with me as I am trying to ration one scope across two weapons. First, I got a deal on the optics, so please do not poick on me right away .. it is a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5x30x50. I am trying to use an MOA riser on each rifle to achieve a "natural" zero and assuming my math is correct and all things are perfect, I should be good. I sent the following email to Kenton Industries hoping they could clarify for me hoping to use their 3 tier MOA special purpose knobs on this scope and apply my MOA math on the range and I am asking for input here w/ the other experts .. so here it goes:

*** All data considering 800ft elevation, 70 degree temp, and 0 degree incline to the target.

AR-15 6.5 Grendel (custom build)

If I put a 22 MOA badger ordnance riser on the rail, it would get me 22” high at 100 yards with the scope mounted in its natural zero (if it is perfect). This sets me up at a natural 603 yard zero without doing anything (123gn Lapua scenar at 2300 fps).

Sako TRG-42 338 Lapua 1:10 twist

If I put a 10 MOA riser on the rail, it would get me 10” high at 100 yards with the scope mounted in its natural zero (if it is perfect). This sets me up at a natural 600 yard zero without doing anything (300gn SMK at 3000 fps).

If this is all correct, relatively speaking, I can use the risers and the scope’s natural zero and move my scope between the rifles knowing pretty much my MOA table and all I would need are your Special Purpose TTC, 3 Tier MOA scale knobs for my Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5x30x50 and knowledge if my loads and I should be rocking.

Does this all seem correct or am I day dreaming? If the science of what I came up with is genuine, the number fudge and actual ballistics that come from my hand loads are just something to work out.

You will have to zero the scope on each rifle irrespective of the position the scope is centred to there are a lot of things that come into where the bullet impacts when it leaves the muzzle the flexibility of the barrel the velocity the type of stock.

Just zero the scope to the rifle you shoot the furthest i would assume that to be the 338 then place it on the 223 and see where it impacts and adjust the scope to suit then write down the setting for the 223 and 338 and you are good to go switching the scopes i switch scopes around all the time if you have good rings and rails you are good to go.

Thanks guys !!! Yeah the handloads for the 6.5 Grendel are a lot cheaper than Lapua .. and stick that will be my "sniper" hunting rife as well. Thanks again for your immediate replies and I will post picks elsewhere in the forum when I have something good to share.

Sounds like it would work. I am planning to do something simalure with my 338 Norma and ar. Bu I am using a ph so the adjustable turrents help. I am just going to track zero move between the two. Also going to use the badger rail on the ar and the 338 Norma has a 20 moa base.

Never taken it that far. I am sure I can get to a mile with hold overs if I had to. I am still working on my load, I am a slow mover with this because it is a very long drive to get to shoot long range. I have also recently broken my ankle so It would take a long time to crutch my ass down the firin line.

Re: Sharing a scope between 6.5 grendel and TRG-42

I was thinking about doing the same, I wanted to switch my NF from my 308 rig onto my 223 ar, I use my 308 a lot more, but I would like to shoot some prarie dogs out 300+ yards (seldomly done) and wondered if switching my NF would be even worth it. And what sort of mout, shoud it be a one piece or a nice set of rings would do?

I am using my seekins rings and a torque wrench. I am not really worried about quick release. If you have high quality base and rings and mount in the same location on the base with a torque wrench you should be able to maintain zero.
