I have been using a Spyderco Sharpmaker for the better part of a year now, and it is a solid product overall. I have noticed one concern, however, and that is that the base allows the angle on the stones to change when pressure is put on them when sharpening. This leads be to believe establishing a perfect angle is impossible, unless the same pressure is used every single stroke.

Anyone else notice this?

Re: Sharpmaker flexes?

Why are you applying enough pressure to bend the base? Mine doesn't bend. I don't put more than 1-2 lbs of pressure on the knife.

I dont feel like I am putting excessive pressure on it, but perhaps I am. To apply so little pressure as to not make the sharpmaker flex would be to little to sharpen the knife, unless VERY little pressure is required.

Re: Sharpmaker flexes?

As far as I remember the DVD that comes with it says 2ish pounds of pressure. Are you actually seeing the sharpening stones move or just the plastic base bending in the middle.

If your knife is getting sharp I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Sharpmaker flexes?

The angle of the stones changes dependent on the pressure, it can be seen. Its not so much the base flexing as it is the loose fit of the stones causing the movement.

Regrettably, I lost the DVD before I ever got a chance to watch it.
