My wife got to name our coming son after her family's last name - short story, I wasnt a fan of the name but I am getting to buy a new rifle because that was what I negotiated for =D

So, I am going to grab a 260 Remington for shooting our 300 to 800yd rifle matches and some coyote hunting (i currently shoot a Rem SPS Tac in 223) but I am on the fence between getting the Savage Long Range Precision or going cheaper with a Rem SPS Tactical again and then re-barreling. My rifle budget (not including the scope) is about $1,000, maybe a bit higher if I think waiting would be worth it. Buds gunshop has the Savage that I want for just under my budget and the SPS Tac is there for just under $600. Any suggestions or experiences you guys would want to share to convince me either way?

I suggest you have a say in the name of your son...you can always buy guns....let me guess, she also "made" you hyphenate your last name? Massive loss of you man card.

I negotiate with my wife to, If she gets a kid I get a new rifle for alot more then what you negotiated for and I still get a say in the name.

Haha, ya, I had to include the story. Whipped I am not. Stubborn she is - more than I. No one's name is hyphenated. His name will be Miller Jones and I am getting a rifle and I am going to be a dad for the first time! So, back to legitimate advice on my prospective rifle!!!

They had shitty lawyers then. My squad leader got rid of his and pays nothing. She even had to pay the court costs.

In all seriousness, it would take more...a lot more...than even a $10k rifle package to make me give up any say in naming my first-born son.

Well, I was trying to tell a funny story and ask a <span style="text-decoration: underline">rifle</span> question. I find a ton more meaning in the way that I will raise my child through teaching and example than I do in his name. Now, please, does anyone have any <span style="font-style: italic">relevant</span> suggestions to my question?

For pure $$ if you have to rebarrel and re-stock the SPS then you will go way over $1,000 not counting the glass.

I did not rebarrel my SPS tactical, got good glass and a great stock, and ended up spending over $2,200

+2 Savage. You can always upgrade later, It costs more in the long run though. Thats what I did, you cant hardly tell its a Savage anymore.

To the OP, congrats on your first child. At least you know to pick your battles and when you do, you know what to negotiate. I negotiate with guns all the time with my wife

I would definitely go with the Ssvage in one if the flavors mentioned as it is the best bang for the buck, and in my IMHO will probably serve you well before needed anything custom.
