Portland Oregon — A 26-year-old bartender at a downtown sports bar was arrested Saturday night after what police described as a “tip jar tantrum” during a packed football game.

According to witnesses, Jessica Miller had been pouring drinks nonstop for nearly an hour when a group of fans ran up a $300 tab but left only $2 in change on the bar. Miller allegedly snatched the bills, held them in the air, and shouted, “That’s not a tip—that’s a slap in the face!”

Patrons say she then unplugged the jukebox, silenced the game, and began pacing the bar while chanting, “Twenty percent or go home!” The scene escalated when she started pouring shots of well whiskey onto the floor, declaring them “sacrifices to underpaid staff everywhere.”

Police say Miller refused to unlock the bar cooler until “every customer pledged loyalty to tipping culture.”

Some regulars hailed her as “the voice of service workers everywhere,” while others said she had turned “happy hour” into “handcuffs hour.”

    She seems nice.

She also seems like she could be kind of stabby.

But bartenders, waiters, bellman, pizza delivery dudes and taxi drivers are at the top of the tip list. ESP bartenders. That’s not tipping out of control. That’s how American runs.

So leaving a 0.667 percent tip on a $300 tab… she should have lit those douche bags on fire.

    Cheers!

I can see why she went off. My wife worked breakfast shift at a Holiday next to the performance arena in Poughkeepsie back in the ‘70s. She would tell me which bands were polite and respectful and which ones treated her like dirt.

One band came in for 11:00 AM breakfast with a complete crew. The only other waitress had gone home already and there was only one person in the kitchen. They literally ordered everything on the menu and then laughed and derided her when the plates didn’t look exactly like the picture and other similar things.

Then when they left, they left $0.25 under an upside down glass of water As her tip. That shit gets old quickly.

It sucks, but that's how it is working for tips. About 30% of the people make up 80% of your tips. You risk the ice snow and cold. Transverse their unshoveled ice covered drive way and sidewalk. When you get there. They tell you. Thank God I didn't have to go out. Then they make stand outside in the cold while you count their exact change back, and ask you, why dont you have a coat on?. 🤣🤣🤣

She through a shit fit for .6% but did she ever put ona mini skirt and do cart wheels for people who tip 100%. Maybe? What was the name of the bar again? 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, but WTF did they arrest her for.

Where tipping culture has gone bullshit…. Clerks at take out joints… At stores. Baristas? You hand me a cup Of coffee and expect 20 percent t? You literally served me a cup of coffee over a counter.

Everyone expects a tip. For nothing.

Then They complain when you give them nothing. For nothing

Disturbing the peace, destruction of private property, acting like a woman. Take your pick.
She was an employee of a private business. I don’t see how you can be charged w disturbing the peace if your action don’t extend past such private property.

Also, I don’t see where the owner was reported to have pressed charges and, since it was his property, nor complaint then no charges.

    Being a woman…lol

Information is missing. How many drinks were ordered? How long were they there?

Tipping culture is way out of fucking control for reasons many reasons (to the point where fucking movie theater employees think they should get tips at the concession stand), but one thing I never understood was tipping based on the value of the bill. It should be a function of number of people, number of things ordered, and length of time you're there. Waitresses don't work any harder to bring me a steak and a beer than they do to bring me a salad and a glass of water.

You aren’t working hard pouring a shot that’s for sure.

Never bartended... but I can tell you with great authority that I've watched good bartenders work.

And they work their asses off. Especially in a crowded room or club with a lot of people all wanting their drinks (and food) now. Those folks work their asses off. Good ones can juggle dozens/hundreds of customers/tabs at a time. And absolutely earn their tips. Bad ones suck.

No idea what the real story is here.

But a good bartender will make an establishment! And earn big bucks! Deservedly.

I'm good with generously tipping great service. And am an 'over-tipper' if I like my server. But not every service is a 'tip' service. And not every service worker is deserving. If their service sucks. Then fuck them.

I can tell you one thing for sure, nothing in that story would equate to a mug shot in a suicide smock 😆

I mean I once tipped a bartender $100 when all I ordered was a couple glasses of water.

I was the DD for a bunch of buddies and they were obliterated after drinking for several hours so I tipped in case they forgot to tip her when they closed their tabs.

Not tipping on a $300 tab is bullshit.

Back in the 1996 to 1997 era of time, we were doing an electrical remodel on a school in McKinney, Texas. And we would have lunch at the Bill Smith Cafe. Back then, it was a meat, 3 sides, and endless rolls and iced tea. Average meal cost was about $6.50 and there would be 4 of us and we each tipped at least a dollar, sometimes more, which was the fair percentage then.

And one time, the MISD school board had lunch there. 16 people across a few tables and 2 waitresses to handle the table. They left a tip that amounted to about 50 cents per person on salaries that dwarfed ours as lowly electricians.

You gotta name drop the band

If the bartender is so good for the business, then the bussiness should pay it better.

Having to shame customers to pay tips so that the worker can get a living wage is bullshit. Tips should be for excellent service, not an expected fee.

And most places I go to, if more than 6 persons per check, a 10% service fee gets added automatically.

especially when/if they're charging $5 or more for a bottle of domestic beer.
i figure if i have money to pay bar prices, i have money to tip.

Agreed. And if I may add......I'll tip someone well that is obviously trying hard, but is not quite able to keep up. They're generally nice people, but a bit flustered/frustrated because they know they can do better. When they see a good tip, their faces light up.

The ones that are indifferent/couldn't care less ? Fuck 'em.

My wife's cousins daughter, blonde 20 year old, makes over 100 in tips per 4 hour shift at Sonic.

We had a company party at one of local restaurants. We arrived to meet our surly waitress. She did nothing but bring us our drinks as, it was a buffet. They charged us 10% service fee plus a 100 dollar tip for the waitress that brought 25 drinks and didn't refill any of them once.

We haven't been back. If a place wants to charge a service fee. I won't go. You have X amount of seats in your establishment, you have waitresses to cover those seats. 8 people is 8 people I don't care if it's 8 singles or a party of 8.

Are you saying you don’t tip the counter guy at Five Guys $10 for handing you two burger combos that cost $50?
