I'm about to pull the trigger on a Wilson trimmer from Sinclairs. I was just curious if my RCBS shell holders will work with it or if the wilson has its own proprietary shell holder I need to order.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

why would the rcbs shell holder work ? i think the wilson trimmer kinda sucks, its not concentric, deburr's crooked ... not that i can recommend a better alternative.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

if it is .. it is a collet that you use... and it works great ... exact size each time and nice and streight. You need to get the collet that is specific for your size ... I have a .308 and there are two collets ... one is for new cases and one for previously fired cases. Not sure of the other calibers.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

I've used the Wilson trimmer for many years. It is accurate and consistent. You don't need the micrometer option. I also have a second trimmer just for trimming bullet meplats. Again, another quality piece of gear.

Get the shellholder for fired brass.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

Yes its the case trimmer I was refering to. I finally stumbled across them, by dumb luck most likely.

I did notice they had 2 seperate offerings one for previously fired brass and also for new brass. Oh well 10$ a pop isn't bad.

From what I've read as far as manual trimmers go the Wilson is a pretty solid setup.

I appreciate your opinions on the equimpent. I'm sure the wilson will suit me just fine. I don't compete, shoot hundreds of rounds a week, nor am I chasing bughole groups. I'd just like to produce afforadable consistent ammo. Thanks again for all the help fellas.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

From what I've read about the setup most people agree the micro is nice but not really worth the extra coin. I've actually got my eye on the sharkfin with the stand included for 80 bucks.. Although I've seen the standard trimmer clamped in a 20 dollar vice as well.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

Ya I got the whole thing- the stand, micrometer everything .. I think it was on the cover of one of their catalogs ... it is very nice ... once you calibrate the micrometer .. you want the case to be 2.005 you turn it to .005 and thats what you get ... I have a grave yard of trimmers in my Garage ... and this is the first one that has actually made it a year + with me and I still like it.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

You want the 'fired brass' shelholder, I have both but have never used the 'new brass' one. Even WITH new brass, the fired brass holder is fine.

Micrometer is great if u use the trimmer for different calibres regularly, otherwise it just sits there looking pretty

The stand is worth it if you have the dollars, it's easy to 'C' clamp to your bench and put away when finished with,

The sharkfin thing I didnt bother with, you just hold the shelholder down with your fingers while cranking the handle with your other hand,
It only takes a few seconds to trim your case so the sharkfin attachment would just slow down the operation IMO.

Great tool

Huh? Are you sure you are talking about a Wilson trimmer? It's probably one of the best on the market as far as getting as squared off as you can.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

I've been using the Wilson case trimmer for about 4 years. It works great but the case holders are definitely more expensive than the pilots on most other systems.
For case trimming it keeps things very consistent and square. The only thing I have been disappointed with is the VLD chamfer tool. I found I can chamfer better by hand than with the Wilson tool.

Re: shell holder for Wilson trimmer?

Hey, I paid at least $40 for the bench vise I hold my wilson in! Of course the bench vise is really handy for a lot of other things too.

The Wilson works great. One of those designs you just look at in awe of its mechanical simplicity and efficiency.

I use the micrometer all the time... every time I change cartridges. I have lots of cartridges. No trial-and-error every time I change, just dial and trim. Time is money.
