Re: Shepard and Pride -Fowler ranging scopes

I had a couple guys come out to a course and they were using the pride fowlers. Though I have not extensively tested them they were getting hits out to a grand consistently with them on hunting rifles.

If all you can afford is a pride fowler I would give it a shot. If it doesn't work out for you sell it down the road. That being said what about the bushnell elite's or super sniper scopes if you are on a limited budget.

The real question is: how much precision is good enough for you? If you have a rifle/load combination which matches the reticle, you are golden. In the real world it can be challenging to develop a load which the rifle likes and also precisely matches the reticle's trajectory. If you are hunting big game at reasonable ranges, pretty close is good enough. If you aspire to be a competitive shooter or want to make first round hits much past 500 yards, you need to either be lucky or spend a lot of time loading and testing. You can learn a lot about reading the wind while testing loads at long range, but for guys who have limited time or money there are better ways to practice.
I have one of the Pride/Fowler scopes on an accurized 10/22, and was fortunate enough to find a load the rifle likes and which also flies exactly the trajectory of the reticle to 200 yards. I love the scope because it allows me to hit more often on short exposure targets than I would be able to if I had to check my range card for hold-overs.
