Not sure if this is the right spot, feel free to move it if need be.

Whats the proper/best way to ship a firearm?

Im not a dealer, this is a private party to private party sale, do I still need to ship a longrifle to an FFL?

What carrier is best to ship through?

Do some states have different rules for this?

Thanks

Re: Shipping rifles

I like to use fedex, Just get a copy of the ffl(I like to call the ffl to confirm). I would put the rifle in a plastic case, tape the case or drop it into a box. Stick the label on it and insure it for more than its worth..........done

Re: Shipping rifles

just shipped one today, but to an ffl. I try and stay current on this stuff but I swear it is always changing. If the Firearm is going out of state it MUST go through and FFL. I have always had good luck with UPS. long guns can go ground pistols(includes revolvers) MUST go overnight. Yes laws differ from state to state that is why it MUST go to an FFL so that the state laws can be enforced.

Lets say it is an AR-15 with all the "bad" features and it is going to California. Do you Know all of Californias' guns laws, didn't think so. I somewhat doubt your "customer" does also. So that is the FFLs' job, to make sure all is good before the gun enters "society"

Make sense

PS oh yea and today UPS told me they require the FFL #. So I had to make a call to the FFL and get his number. UPS said that was new requirement

Re: Shipping rifles

I have shipped LONG guns thru USPS. They require a copy of the license from the FFL you are shipping to, so keep an extra copy handy. You are also supposed to enclose a copy in the box with the firearm. Other than that, I usually put "delivery confirmation" and "require a signature" on the shipment. Otherwise it might end up sitting on a porch somewhere.

When I sell a gun, I require that their FFL will accept from a "non FFL". That way, I don't have to pay my dealer to ship it.

Re: Shipping rifles

if you ever need a question answered about shipping a firearm please refer to LINK. About the pistol having to ship overnight is not correct, thats would be the couriers choice but not the law.

Re: Shipping rifles

I did not mean to say that it was the "law" to ship pistols overnight. It is infact the couriers "rules" both FEDEX and UPS REQUIRE it. You can't ship a firearm through USPS so you are limited by the couriers you have access to. DHL left the US market.

sorry, I'm just used to the guy behind the counter that always says"it's the law" then you have to school them. That's why I create the shipping label @ home and just drop off @ kinko's.

Re: Shipping rifles

It is all good. I know what you mean about educating people. When I came home with my first ak47, the whole family shit along with everyone I work with. My family and emplorer are very gun friendly, but have no clues to the laws

Do you inform the folks at Kinko's what is in the package?

I personally have had the best luck with USPS priority insured.

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
