Re: Shooter+iPhone 4G+Verizon??
Shooter is pretty freaking cool and seems to be dead on for me. It grabs readings from the nearest weather station and can hook up with a Kestrel through Bluetooth. It can make corrections for MV due to temperature variance and for super long distance, it corrects for Coriolis and Spindrift. It also features Bryan Litz's ballistic library.
It has a built-in ranging app right where you need it. And it is $10!
I switched from a Blackberry solely to get shooter. My dad has an iPhone. It is pretty cool... operation is very smooth. The way that it stores and recalls contacts is not very good and we have been searching for a Dialer that is as good as a Blackberry for an iPhone.
I bought a Motorola Defy. It is waterproof. I had an issue with the speaker, which they repaired, but I had to uninstall and reinstall everything. It is not as smooth in operation as an iPhone (it can be a little laggy at times), but it has a lot of really great useful capabilities, especially if it is rooted. Wireless tether is awesome. Titanium backup is also awesome. When they update to Froyo operating system, I will be able to run Java, which I can't believe the iPhone can't do yet.
All in all, I use AT&T, so I could have gone with an Apple, but I went with the Motorola Defy (which is for T-Mobile), unlocked it, and use it on AT&T's network. The main reason I did this was that I wanted a ballistic calculator and Shooter looked to be the best out there, so I figured it would be nice if I could talk to people and cruise the Internet on my ballistic calculator. It would also be nice if it were weather resistant, so I ended up with the Defy. If I ever decide to "upgrade" my phone, I can pull the sim card out and use the phone as a dedicated ballistic calculator. That was my thinking. But you may want something different. I have to say, when I use my dad's iPhone, my impression is that it is very slick and presents very well... but functionally, it is no better than my phone. Maybe it is a little worse, but I am sure I could customize my dad's iPhone to make it as good as my Defy, except for the waterproof and dustproof part.
