I have a question for you guys who've been around the block far longer than me.

How fast do you shoot your rounds through your chronograph?

Do you pop them off as fast as possible?

Do you take your time, maybe one shot every 30 seconds?

Keep the cartridge out of the chamber until the second you're ready to fire?

Am I overthinking everything? Should I just rack those rounds down range and get my data and get out?

Thanks!

What does the chronograph have to do with this? It doesn’t care about your rate of fire. If you’re load testing, your fundamentals matter most. As a general rule, probably best not to cook the rounds in the chamber. When your group shooting though, it shouldn’t be an issue.

IME it is less about rate of fire than it is about the dwell time of the case in the chamber. Once the barrel gets hot I have found that rounds that dwell in the chamber longer tend to be 5-10 fps faster in my rifle.

If I am testing for velocity consistency, I try to fire at a smooth, even pace while trying to keep my dwell time as consistent as possible.

For load development I take my time, a minute or two between each round.
If just plinking it doesn’t matter..
I have almost got mine figured out..
