Just need a little help here. Recently bedded a Rem 700 in an A5. Took the gun out shooting the other day and it was grouping great at 100, but producing two groups within a 5 shot string. Vertical change was almost nothing but there was about 1.5 moa horizontal between the two. I have never seen this before. I'd have two shots touching in one group and then three touching a few inches to the left. Does this sound like a bedding issue or scope issue or what? I have another 700 set up just like this one and it shoots fine.

Re: Shooting two groups within shot string

Chances are the bedding is jacked up. Most people don't realize just how crucial bedding is. They assume since they read the instructions on the net they can do it themselves. Unfortunately it's not that simple. I see it day in and day out. You can easily screw up a guns accuracy with a poor bedding job.

Dirty barrels don't double group. I'm telling you the bedding is probably jacked up. Broken scopes don't typically double group and neither does a bad barrel.

When a rifle fires the recoiled lug impacts the stock and causes it to expand. When it retracts in a stressed stock the rifle has a different harmonic when fired. It will bounce back and forth all day long doing the same thing.

I have seen broken scopes do it on occasion but not with any regularity what so ever.

I will even go as far to say send it to me and let me bed it. If the situation isn't improved the work and return shipping is free.

Re: Shooting two groups within shot string

Gun is a brand new Rem 700 MLR in an A5. I'm assuming bedding as well. I took the action out and I could see where the bolt handle was rubbing on the stock so I relieved that and I could also see where the front of the barrel was flexing enough to touch the inner forend of the stock even though there was about an 1/8" clearance so I opened that up as well. I did have the action screws torqued to 55 in lbs so I increased that to 65 in lbs. Should be able to test tomorrow and report back. I'm thinking that the consederable added recoil over the 308 is making everything move around much more. I've used this scope on my 308 with no issues.

Jared, thanks for the offer. If this doesn't fix it, I will defintely be sending it to you asap. PM me what a bedding job would cost and turnaround time.
