I know that one can run a short action cartridge in a long action rifle, however I want to build a 28 nosler to run the 195 bergers at extended lengths. Bighorn has agreed to open my action up in order to accommodate a cip length dbm. I didn't until just now think that it may effect future use as a switch barrel for short action rounds. Would they possibly feed fine by altering the feed lips of a cip magazine, or should I leave it alone and lose a little velocity to run the 195's in a shorter magazine? I really want to run them long, but I don't want to screw myself over on the short action rounds either, because I want my son to grow up shooting it as well.

What short action cartridges are you planning to shoot? I ran a 260 in a long action and it worked fine, although this sounds like a different animal. You could always run long action cartridges and download them for your kid till he can manage the recoil of a full load. It's not ideal and the best bet in this situation may be 2 different rifles.

Im thinking in the 6mm CM to 260 range to start with. Nothing super small like a 223 or anything, but I guess my main concern should be if a cip length magazine can be altered to work reliably with a 308 sized (roughly) case? Please advise.
