Gunsmithing Short action stock on long action rifle?

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

If there was some way to make it work you would have to make it a single shot. There would be no way to get the mag to work. I'm sorry but I think you're going to have to go with a short action or a different stock.

Good luck,

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

I am sure you COULD, but you would have to completely re-inlet the stock, then you would have to fill the old recoil lug, etc.

If you had to pay to have the work done, then a custom stock would probably be cheaper.

Which stock is it you are looking at?

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

Its the bell and carlson tactical!
As said above in my first post...
Stupid... They have stocks for the howa 1500 long action, but not the tactical ones that i like...
Does anybody know of anyone that makes custom tactical stocks for the howa?

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

With some effort you can make just about anything work, but it's not likely worth the effort. I put a long action Savage into a long action Remington 700 stock a couple of months ago. I did it because the stock was free and I just got it in my head to do it.

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

omfg....this is like putting lipstick on a pig....its way retarded.

you need to jump into the fray of buying and selling and swapping your way into a proper gun and stock....don't make this a presidential rigging contest !

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

Forest, call B&C and see if they can help you out. You never know.

Failing that, take a look at Manner of McMillan. I am betting they can inlet one of their stocks for a Howa long action.

If all else fails, then it may be time to order a Remington or Savage to open your options up a bit.

Re: Short action stock on long action rifle?

I had a laminated wood stock, so it wasn't that big of a deal. If there had been an aluminum bedding block I'd never have tried. I simply cut out enough for the action to fit and pillar bedded it. It took a little bondo and a plate on the bottom since it was a BDL stock, but after it was done I sanded it down and painted it. I just left the bolt handle in the original position and moved material as needed.
