Hello Gentlemen and ladies if there are some!!

I need some more of your advise.

If you were to build a gun from a short action with a mag bolt face, what caliber would you go with???

Purpose of the gun would be this-

Tac Comp gun
Long range weapon for banging steel
Long range hunting
Paper punching

All you advice and expert opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

Agree with JCH.

I have a build in process on a Surgeon 591 for the 6.5WSM.

But, the barrel life is expected to be shorter than the 7WSM or the 7Rem SAUM

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

7 RSAUM. With the Sierra 180's you should be able to touch the lands with a Type 2 mag and not have the bullet shoved way down in the case. Any of the others listed will likely have problems getting anywhere near the lands without having a really short throat.

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

Thanks Adam, I just wasted 5 minutes of my life!!!

To continue:

I am thinking I like the 7mm. Good compromise between thumper and light weight caliber. I have a 284 now so I guess I need to see how much more advantage the mag will get me!

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

7 SAUM because it fits in a mag much better than the 7 WSM. Kinda like a 6.5CM and a 260

Run the Alpha 2 mags, open the aft lip on the feed ramp to run them at 2.95+ in length, start at 2.90 initially to leave "burn room"

The 7 SAUM in a short action is going to be a little bit ahead of the 284 Win but not a huge amount. Similar to a 280 vs. the 284 you already have.

To be totally honest I'd just stick with that 284 Win and shoot it a bunch, get really good with the rifle and spend the time/money/barrels on feeding that 284 a lot!

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

7mm WSM with alpha mags is what I'm running. But I think it is a wash between that on 7mm SAUM. SAUM has better brass options but it is hard to find and more expensive. Winchester 7WSM is good if you weight sort. Either way I would either use an alpha mag or a Seekins mag to give you extra seating length.

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

Either 7 saum or 7 wsm. Both are great rounds.

I have seen a lot of people running 7 wsm from short actions with dbm's. Personally I just sold my 7/300 wsm that was built on a long action. If I build another I would go straight 7wsm and short action with 162 amax's.

Also Josh at Copper Creek Ammo sells mag length 7 wsm. I get a bunch of stuff from him he is GTG.

7wsm Ammo

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

I'd do a 7WSM or SAUM. Wasn't Norma or Lapua supposed to have brass available for one or both families of cartridges a year or so ago? I really believe in building around good brass and it's hard to beat the BC's and bullet selection with the 7MM's.--Mike Ezell

Mike,
Welcome to SH!
Are you still building rifles?

I'm in with Bohem's opinion on 284 for a SA and buying barrels with enough components to use them up.

If it was in a long action then 7SAUM would get my vote.

I think the 284 is nice if you want to re-barrel something like a 308, because you don't have to change the bolt. If the bolt already has a magnum face, then the short magnums make sense.

So, for a mag boltface I'd say 7WSM.

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

Yeah I have the short action mag bolt face action right now. And I have a 8.7 twist barrel right now as well. It will finish either at 26, 27, or 28 inches. Haven't decided that either.

I no longer have my .284 win on a long action so I will be replacing that with hopefully a little more bang!!!

Man, I am really leaning towards the & SAUM because its something like .065 shorter. I can thus seat my bullets out another 65 thou further and get them out of the case.

Is this logical thinking???

I know the 7WSM has more case volume but if the bullet is sitting in there another 65 thou wouldnt it pretty much bean advantage for the 7SAUM???

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: ***Short action w/ mag boltface! What would U do??

I was going to re-barrel the Hospitaller in my sig to .284 Win, but I settled on the 7RSAUM because I think it is a better fit in the short action. I'm hoping to load it down to near the .284 Win specs to increase barrel life. We shall see.

Where a given bullet winds up in the case really has everything to do with how much freebore it has and the leade angle. For 180 VLD'sthe WSM is about right with .220"ish freebore. I think the neck is longer on the SAUM and the freebore will be less...probably in the .180" range, for the same bullet to seat with the big part of the bottom of the bullet being just above the neck/shoulder junction in both cases.---Mike
