My goal is to have a light weight bolt action that I can shot steel with using factory or surplus ammo. I would like to build a short barrel .308 bolt action rifle. I would like to run a 16in or 18in barrel with brake. I am not looking to shot sub MOA nor spend 3k on this rifle.

Looking for help on where to start.

I was thinking about starting with a Remy 700 SPS tactical, http://www.snipercentral.com/spstactical.htm, switching out the stock and having the barrel cut, crowned and threaded.

i just bought the 700 sps aac-sd with a 20 inch barrel. its very light, weighing in at 7.5 lbs. i paid 650 for it new. this might be a good starting point for you

Well most of the SPS tacticals on average are sub moa shooters, assuming the shooter is good enough to produce groups that size. Throw on a Bell and carlson stock, and you can get a RAD brake, TPS steel rings and base and maybe a Vortex Viper PST and you will be sitting pretty for a long time. JMO

Something similar to that would be the Savage 10FP. You can buy it in the 20" barrel already in the folding Choate stock, and then have the barrel threaded or cut back and threaded. Of course, I am now a diehard Savage fan...

One thing to keep in mind is going short and putting on a brake will make it loud. I just cut my 20 sps tactical 308 to 16.5 inches and put on a brake. The rifle is almost exclusively shot with 308 subsonic ammo and is now too loud to shoot without earplugs (before at 20 " it was real quiet).

It is very handy and would make a great hunting/truck gun, but I do miss it beig quiet and probably would not do it over again given the rifles intended subsonic role.

I'd go SPS Tactical AAC-SD it has the 1/10 twist. I don't think you would be asking to much to shoot sub MOA, at least inside of 200 yards even at 16".

Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD

It hovers around MOA with the factory stock. If you keep the stock and don't weight it down with a tactical telescope it will be a great light weight steel banger even with the 20" barrel.

Honestly it's the shortest .308 in my safe.
