Short-stroke piston

Can anyone explain how a short-stroke gas piston works? I can't find a decent description which surprises me.

Also, If you know any disadvantages of Short-stroke pistons that would be great.

454ci block, 427 crank, 454 13:1 pistons, 427 rods. Big Block short stroke..
