I would like to shorten and re-crown my varmint barrel on my Remington 700 barrel by one inch. What is the proper way of doing it. Does the barrel has to be removed or it can stay on? What would a gunsmith charge?

Depending on the smiths lathe it may or may not need to be removed. It needs to be dialed in on a lathe cut with a parting tool and then crowned.I would expect $75 to $100 to do it.

If you want a brake it will need to be threaded at the same time and depending on the brake it may need to be timed and or blended.Your looking at another $50-100.

shortening the barrel should not affect your accuracy so long as you don't drop to a length where you no longer have the proper velocity for the distance you are shooting. I've shot my 10.5" barrel out past 300 yards without problems.

My local gunsmith charges around $120 for barrel shortening and re-threading the barrel. If the barrel has to be pulled or not depends on the weapon system and barrel length but generally I believe they need to pull the barrel which adds shop costs.

Re: Shortening Barrel Proper Procedure

As I understand it from some well respected barrel makers, the issue is that the actual bore may not be centered in the blank and the farther you get from muzzle, the more deviation you may have.
