I met a fellow hider, Peepaw, today @ the range today so I have a witness lol.I shot a few different loads of 168gr AMAX with some Hodgdon H4895. I loaded 10 with 41.5 gr, 10 with 42.0gr, 10 with 42.5, 10 with 43.0gr, and 10 with 43.5gr. I found that the 43.0gr and the 43.5gr were not very accurate, but the 41.5, 42.0, and 42.5 did great. I shot 5 rd groups @100yds of each except the largest load I only shot 3. My best group was with the 42.5gr which left 1 hole with 5 rds. I think I am going to try to tweak that load and try 42.7gr. I am shooting this out of a stock Rem 700 SPS Tac .308 that I glass bedded, with a Falcon Menace 5.5x25x50, AZPrecision Varminter knob, cheek peice, and a bipod. Here is a pic:

The 42.5gr 5shot group is at 6 o'clock.

Any comments or help is welcome.

Re: Shot my first reloads...

I wouldn't even tweak that anymore. That's an awesome group. I would just take that load out to 300 and 500 yards to see how it behaves. Why waste time and ammo tweaking it when it's sub-MOA already, unless you are doing BR shooting. JMHO

Re: Shot my first reloads...

I appreciate the suggestion. I am not really going for a BR along the lines of F class or anything. I just want to do this for fun. I really want to go trekking somewhere and shoot yotes, targets, and camp! I see some of the land guys on here shoot and I am extremely jealous, 98% of TX is private land so you have to know somebody or pay a lot of money for a lease.

Re: Shot my first reloads...

I found that my 100m loads shot one hole groups all day. Then when I started shooting at 200M & 300M it was all over the target. Went from 2.80 to 2.810 OAL and its one group at 100 and a nice clover at 200m. Now that you have a charge that shoots good put up some targets at 200 and see how it does. You wouldn't believe what COAL can do for accuracy. Do a search for max OAL and do some experimenting. Doesn't hurt to have a chrony either

Re: Shot my first reloads...

Yea the chrono will have to wait a bit, but that would be great! I would have gone out to 200yds but the range was packed that day. And it was the first hot day for my area of south tx, 85deg!

Re: Shot my first reloads...

Nice group. Welcome to the addiction of reloading. It can be as bad as shooting. It's cool to see when you hit that sweet spot on the powder charge and compare it to other groups.

What range are you shooting at around here? I noticed the local ranges were crowded this past weekend.

Bro, You call that's hot???

. For us desert rats, hot is anything above 110 degrees

Re: Shot my first reloads...

lol, 110 is something I dare not think of. But it averages 95 during the summer, and the humidity in tx makes you feel like your slow roasting in a crock pot too! I need to make my way up there so I can see how easy you desert rats have it hehe... j/k

Re: Shot my first reloads...

I shot my own stuff for the first time past 400 today. I didn't quite shoot MOA at 500 and 600 but that was me more than the ammo. It's pretty cool to roll your own.
