Gunsmithing Should I free float my rem 700 ADL varmint? Worth it?

I'm thinking about free floating my rem 700, it has an synthetic stock and isn't free floated. I'm thinking about sanding the"ribbing" down inside the stock. Or should I shim the action screws and raise the barrel?

Normally that will always at the very least not negatively affect the rifles accuracy. Check for flex in the stock when loaded on the bipod. If it's not a sturdy stock it will look fine and "floated" when handling but when loaded it will still touch the barrel.
If that's the case and the stock isnt worth modifying buy a better stock.
If the stock is stout enough yes, sand with a dowel until the stock clears the barrel. If it's similar to a Remington 700 varmint stock you could fill the channels with your choice of filler (jbweld, epoxy, etc) to further stiffen it up and/or add weight.

Out of curiosity does anyone have a throw away varmint 700 stock? Mine doesn't have a drop box just internal magazine. I'd be willing to buy it from you at a reasonable price.

Well if anyone has an exact factory ADL stock let me know, or an equivalent that will fit a 700 varmint action with a 26" bull barrel. I think I want to keep the internal may and not worry about switching over to bdl drop box.

I have an exact rem 700 adl stock that is on my 20 inch varmint bull barrel.

If that will work let me know

Looking to put it on an oryx chassis, but now you guys have me looking at a krg bravo.
I just want to be able to feed mags of some kind in it and shoot out to 1000 yards at matches with it.

Regarding the original topic...

As mentioned, it can be good or it can be bad. Sometimes that support is necessary for whatever Barrel harmonic is working. If you're happy with how it shooting I wouldn't change anything. As the saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it. Over the years I've seen a few guns that shot by far worse Bing free floated. That said, they were those really thin barrels ruger and Remington guns...

let me know what ADL stock looks like, if it's just like my varmint stock with two swivel studs in front I may be interested.

Even though I don't care for my Bravo chassis, I'd still recommend one.

The reason i don't care for it is because of my old McMillan modified 40X competition stock...heavier, pistol grip w/palm swell, 3way adj butt plate, Freeland rail...couldn't find someone locally to cut it for DBM so I got the Bravo...

anyway, if I wasn't spoiled I'd have minimal complaints with the Bravo chassis. Hard to beat for the money

After some reconsideration, I'm thinking it might be easier/ better to just fork
the cash and get a better stock. My budget is no more than $200, and I'm keeping the internal magazine and want to use existing hardware with a drop in fit. Suggestions?

Wait Awhile for a Remington varmint, PSS style stock to show up. 200 boxes and I can get you much in the way of a new stock / chassis.

I would seriously reconsider your decision regarding the cash you have available. You can pick up a Bravo stock new front or four hundred bucks and used for around the $300 mark.

Remington 700 PSS. I don't remember if it was McMillan or HS precision. It's an ambidextrous stock with a nice palm swell on both sides, wider forend, completely free floated to handle Remington's varmint heavy barrel. If you're going 4 and importing style taper you'll have to do some cleaning up of the channel.

Couldn't find a decent picture of one ...... but you can go online and look for yourself fo remington 700 pss
