Should I go heavier?

Hey gents I could really use your input on this one. In the past I have used the 175smk out to 1000 with decent results in my .308-1/12 twist barrel(26'). I am currently having this rifle rebarreled with a 1/11 twist (24'). My question is the following: Have you long range guys noticed better results with the heavier bullets (ie 190smk). Or do you consider the lower weight 155's and 175's ideal for a .308? I don't have the luxury of a nearby 1000 yd range. My trips there are a 3.5 hrs drive and require quite a bit of preparation before hand.

Thanks,
-ALEX-

Re: Should I go heavier?

I shoot 175's when I'm shooting 1000 yards and 155's at shorter ranges, my home club is limited to 500 yards. What kind of velocity are you pushing the 175's? I would be a little concerned about that barrel length and stabilizing the 190's with that twist. I am sure those more experienced that I will add to this. Curious to know myself. I am shooting a 25" schneider about 2650fps with the 175's in a one in 10 twist.

Re: Should I go heavier?

My 175's were averaging 2680fps and were pretty good at 1000 and absolutely OUTSTANDING, accuracy wise, at 100yds. But like everything else I'm never satisfied and the change to a slightly faster twist rate now has me pondering on the possibilities.

Re: Should I go heavier?

I wouldn't change a thing. Sniper rifle are a 1/12 with a 24" rare 26" barrels. They shoot fine at 1k. by going faster on the twist that will just give you the means to....,
1. how are you on components, if you have a sunch of 175 shoot them.
2. what do you plan to do, tgt shoot, hunt, or plinker
either way you are going to need to work up a load.
if anything work one up for the just in case.
