I just got some new Lapua .308 for my new gas gun.. I normally dont shoot this high quality brass so I always resize new brass, Do I need run lapua brass through a die or can I start reloading it?

I've noticed a fair number of neck dents and inward dings in Lapua new 308 brass and have had to expander mandrel some and end up just neck sizing all for good neck tension consistency. This was not my experience with other Lapua calibers though.

It's perfectly fine to run it....assuming the necks aren't all dented! Some of my 308's were pretty bent up so I ran them through the die.

Pray tell, do you also resize the cases of new brass cartridges? They're made exactly the same way empty cases for reloading are made. In addition, resized cases are not necessarily capable of better accuracy than new unresized brass. I've demonstrated this to myself many times.
Unless there is gross deformation of the case mouths/necks I don't size any new cases be it cheap or expensive brass.

I run all my brass through a mandrel before loading it up. I have noticed that sometimes Lapua brass is even a little dinged up. I also do it to get the right neck tension and to straighten the necks out.

laod it, shoot it.
I run 308 lapua in my gas gun.
the first 100 i ran them thru the sizer die.
the next 100 i got lazy and just laoded them.
i didn't see any difference in group size.

Grumulkin: yes I also resize new brass, but that is usually winchester or remington and that brass always has bent mouths, chips, and dents and usually have to even throw 3-4 per 50 away.... this is my first time wiht Lapua and it is great shape.... so that is why I asked

Just size the necks and you should be GTG. If the mouths are really beat up, run'em through a mandrel. No need to FL resize.

There is no reason to re-size any new brass. If you have deformed case mouths just hit those. No need to work the brass if you do not need to.

Resize for good practice.
If your die is setup properly for minimal sizing, and your rifles chamber is within specs, you probably wont even see any shoulder bump... just neck sizing.

Resize 1/2 of it, and don't resize the other 1/2. Shoot and see which is more accurate.

It takes what, maybe 30 minutes tops to resize new cases? In my progressize I can crank them out in under 15 minutes...why on earth would you not resize new cases? If you don't have time to reload right then just go buy factory ammo.

Firing rounds with god knows what for neck tension is a perfect waste of components, IMHO.........

I would just resize the necks, also don't forget to measure the COAL I found all the new lapua stuff I received was all over 2.010 in length and the case mouths on 1/3 of them where misshaped. You will find that most .308 gas guns really work the brass. Some gas guns may only need to be neck sized but my experience has been that they would have to be full length resized.
I know some guys who like to use weaker loads for fire forming, however I shoot mine just normal using good components. No sense in training with a complete different load.

2. You say it takes 30 minutes tops to resize new cases? I would ask how many cases and how long does it take you to remove the lube?
3. So, let's say you do lube your cases and don't remove the lube. Do you think lube left in the case mouth will affect neck tension?
By the way, I'm willing to spend as much time as needed to get the most accurate ammo possible. The only reason I don't resize new cases is because I've never found an accuracy benefit and I think it's a waste of time excluding, of course, the few new cases with grossly deformed case mouths.
But, if you like to fiddle...

grumulkin: very good point about new brass and factory ammo!, like I said though... Im used to reloading with winchester brass which isnt even close to the quality as Lapua... I only resized 50 out of the 100 cases of Lapua that I bought just to see if there is a difference (probably wont be).. I dont think I would ever shoot the winchester without resizing it though, its very poor quality

No, load them and shoot them. The last batch I bought was GTG right out of the box.
I can buy running a mandrel IF you have a bunch of dinged up necks, but otherwise NO with Lapua. Shot lights out on the first firing.
