I personally prefer 50mm for bolt rifles. Because you are putting it on an AR platform it really does not matter if it is a 50 or 56mm.

I have a 56mm and I love it (so much I ordered a second). It is my understanding that it should offer a bit more clarity but I have not compared it to a nightforce 50mm. Its definately better than my leupold mark 4 but I guess thats a no brainer.

56mm they say offers 10% more light to come through at low light conditions. if ur not doing the majority of ur shooting at dusk or dawn, prob not a big deal.
The issue with ar type rifles is the flat base to barrel joint. unlike a bolt rifle, there is no drop to allow for a larger objective with same ring height. Meaning, the ar will need higher rings for a 56mm than a 50mm. higher rings = holding ur head higher. on an ar rifle, that is where it gets awkward is holding ur head up higher or finding a decent cheek peice to raise ur head to assume proper sight alignment that is repeatable.

The benefit is a larger exit pupil, but unless you are going with a benchrest power range you shouldn't notice much difference, even a 5-22 offers a 2+ exit pupil with the 50.
I'd go 50, just because I like my scopes lower on AR's than most.

i am wanting it low as possible so, thats the route i will most likely go

I'm useing a 8x32x56 on my Ar-10. It might be a little much for that rifle but it works for me. I'm useing 1.25" rings with the 1/2" spacer and the ojb. sits .345" off the top rail.
I can play with the rings and spacer some to lower the scope some but for now it's fine.

I have the 8-32X56 on my TRG 22. But if I was putting one on an AR 10 I go with the 5.5-22X50 as well.

A Badger 22 MOA rail and Badger 1" height rings worked well with my 56mm S&B. Feels like a perfect height when behind the rifle. You could probably go with .885s with the 50mm objective but I would recommend the 22 MOA rail either way.

"They" is an article I read reviewing multiple scopes in some magazine which I dont remember right now.
So you got me wondering and so after I checked NF website, the exit pupil on the 50mm is 9.1mm and the exit pupil on the 56mm is 10.2mm. crunching some numbers results in a little over a 10% increase in size of the exit pupil. It is my guess that the pupil size IS a direct correlation to the amount of light that is allowed to pass through. Numbers dont lie.

Of course if the corelation is not linear, which I could not tell you, then this is not the case. I DO know that a larger pupil = more light, I am just not sure of the correlation (linear, exponential, sinusoidal, etc)
Given these numbers are at the lowest power setting (5.5x)

So, again, if ur not shooting in low light conditions, and also want a lower mounted scope, I would go with the 50mm.
