So after seeing some side charging ARs and also hearing they can help stop gas in the face when shooting suppressed (and plugging the back opening). I decided I would go for it on my own.
The main problem is that I am doing this on a 9mm ar. There is no separate carrier, it's all one piece. Compound that with the fact the extractor is on that right side, there is not much material for a screw to bite, and it can't go in to far or it will push on the extractor.
This was why I went with a 10-32 screw instead of a 1/4-28. My question, is if this will be strong enough.
In the pictures you can see I just have a stainless socket cap screw in there as a place holder. I still need to turn out a knob.
I know stainless likes to snap off at the head if you tighten them a little too tight, so I'm planning on finding a grade 8 screw.
Other than that milling the receiver was cake, drilling and taping the bolt was the bane of my problems. I found I still need to mill off the rear hole for the dust cover rod since that gets in the way. Other than that I'm pretty happy with it.
Now I need to mill out a nice block to fit in the back were the charging handle used to be.
