Gunsmithing Side cocking AR uppers

I'm looking at a new AR project for the new year.

Only problem is this has to be a UK legal rifle so only single shot capability.

I've looked at using the rear charging handle to cycle the bolt but I think this would be less than ideal (slow and need to move head each time)...so, reluctantly it looks like I will go down the side handle charging (straighht pull) route.

Here's the question.....

Has anyone had any experience of opening out slots in ejection ports for right side cocking handles using the Young Manufacturing Inc NM handle (http://www.youngmanufacturing.net/product-info.php?pid78.html)

or in modifying uppers and carriers for left-hand cocking?

SGC in the UK offer a forged upper that is ambi but I'd really prefere a single billet upper as I think (assume) this would be a stronger option (especially if I went for something with thicker than standard walls (like the VLTOR MUR). Is this a correct assumption?

Any help/input/experience welcome.....

Young MFG NM carrier/with side charging handle and a Mega-machine billet upper are very nice...............
