looking for realistic load data for 20 inch 1 in 9 twist ar15. my componets are sierra 69 hpbt, nosler brass , CCI br primers, so far only have 2 powders to choose from Varget / XBR ,any sugestions.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I haven't shot XBR but Varget will do everything you need in the AR with 69's. For 77's I'm running 24 grains. I haven't shot 69's but the go to load is around 25 grains, Sierra gives a max of 26.1. Even with a ballpark to start in your results may vary.

23.2 or 23.3 for the XBR with a max at 23.8. Same advice as above.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I use varget for my 223 bolt and it works well for the 69smk. I get around 2700 fps out of my 20 inch bolt with 24 grains.

Not screamin fps, but it is very accurate very consistently.

I am just a little bit off the lands with oal.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I have a Rock River Predator Pursuit with a 1 in 8 twist 20" barrel, after market single stage trigger, Harris bipod. My Sierra 69 grain are backed by 26 grains of XBR. Very consistent out to 600 on a good day. 1.1" group at 400 last week. Shooting 3030 FPS. No pressure signs.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I use XBR and it drops consistant and does very well with temp. I used to use Tac and that shot well also, but more temp sensitive.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

25.3 Varget is Sierra's Accuracy load

Trim to 1.750
2.26 OAL
Rem 7.5 primers

Pretty accurate load from what I have seen.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I use 24.0gr of Varget for a fairly soft 3gun load using 69gr MK in a 1:8 Wylde chambered gun. Things heat up past 24.5gr though but within limits.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

26.4 grains VV N140 - this is a hot load so work up with caution. Rem brass, CCI 400's 20" SPS Tactical

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

just realized i might be wasting my time, my barrel is stamped 5.56 not .223, anyone think this will hurt accuracy?

5.56 is the chamber.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

hav been told 5.56 chamber has longer throat than .223 will this hurt?

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I switched from varget to benchmark with my 69's. shot better, cleaner, and a little more velocity.

just a little info for you........

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I am devolping a load for a rra varmint a4 18" 1 in 8"
R-p brass
69 smk
Rem 71/2 br primers
Varget
I think I found an accuracy node at 24.5 grains sorry no chrono data yet. I started out at mag length with a light lee factory crimp. I played with the oal and got it shooting sub 1/2 moa at 100 yards. I just need to chrono it and check accuracy at say 300 yards but I think I am there on this load.
Check load data from official sources and work up accordingly!!!
Some manuals have this as a mild load. Others show it hot. I have plenty of room to go hotter without pressure signs but feel no need to ymmv

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

+1 on any reasonable charge of Varget.

25 grs in LC brass was my short line load (200,300) for my Douglas bbl AR, set up for service rifle matches. Benched and scoped at 100 yds, it would turn in .6 - .8 moa for 10 shot groups. . . Why look any further??

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

My loads were (necessarily) magazine length FWIW.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

Finally got some trigger time this week, went with 26gr of varget and the 69 gr smk, nosler brass, cci 400 and shot a best of 5+" at 300yds, Prone and solid as a rock, I know the Kreiger barrel will do much better. gonna try 24.0, 24.5, 24.8, 25.1 , 25.3. thinking if I back off It will do better. on a good note shot a few of my old stock 55 gr hpbt sierra at 26.8 gr of varget and held 1.5" not to bad but the 69 should do much better.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I've had a lot of luck with 25.4 gr of varget, cci primers, and remington brass. about .5 moa at 100 yards. haven't tested for groups past that but i've been able to consistently hit 12" steel plates out to 700 yards. and can get pretty close to one at 1000 yards.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

update - my best group was .875 with 69smk / cci 400 / nosler brass / 24.0 gr varget. worst was 26.0 getting alot of vertical stringing 5 shot groups. tried the 25.3 accuracy load it was 1.125 scattered group. any sugestions? about to give up on this bullet.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

my brother has some r15 thinking of trying a few with this, anyone know if its temp sensitive?

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

All powders are temp sensitive. Some more than others. Allot of people say R15 is no good because its temp sensitive, I don't shoot in extreme heat, but from zero to eighty degrees at 100-300 yds POI change is negligible, maybe I'll take it out in the cold this winter.

What degree of accuracy are you looking for? ARs are known to be accurate, as in 1/2 to 1 MOA capable, they don't all shoot bugholes, many won't shoot better than 1.5 MOA.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

One published Sierra accuracy load was 25.5gr Varget and 69SMK. The Sierra accuracy loads seem to change from edition to edition.

I'm at 25.5gr Varget in mixed commercial brass with Federal match primers. I'm getting 10 shots 1moa at 100 with BM DCM barrel (chrome lined) and 5 shots all touching at 100 with Krieger 18" barrel.

I think anything from 24.5 to 25.5 will produce excellent results.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

my plan is to stretch out my little ar to the limit, shot 500yds yesterday with it, using the 55 gr load,. the wind was about 6-12 with big gusts.(lots of fun) Im hoping the 69 will buck the wind a little better. my 55 gr load will shoot 1.5" consistantly at 300 but really wanders in the wind. Still working on my wind doping. the 69 should shoot as good or better than the 55, not looking to go to a bigger gun as im still learning the whole wind dope and distance thing . I can get a lot more trigger time with the smaller caliber.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

i gave up on varget in my Hornady LnL ap, switched to Ramshot tac and never looked back, i shoot 50-77 grain and i am

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I have found that 25.0 of H4895 has been more accurate in a few AR's and a bolt gun with the 69 Sierra. Wolf SRM primers, LC or Lapua cases ( bolt gun)

I'm running well north of that with IMR 8208 XBR in both a 5.56 chamber and a Wylde chamber... YMMV

QL claims my pressures are good, and brass and prmers would indicate that as well
Velocity in 18" Rock Creek QPQ'd barrel is 2800 ft/secs, 24" Colt 6724 is 2909 ft/secs.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

25.3 of varget is Sierra's best accuracy load, it worked out that way for me, can't
be just a coincidence.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

Accurate 2520. Is what I use with good results.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

I have used similar Varget charges as listed above with great results.
I was just curious if anyone has tried the Alliant 2000MR powder?
I have some of this and just haven't got around to trying it yet.

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

LC Brass
Federal 205M Primer
69 Grain SMK (Seated to 2.255" OAL)
25.5 grains of RE15 is Sierra's published accuracy load

This has been the most accurate load that I have found for ARs with 1-9 twist barrels.
(1 MOA min out to 500 yards.)

Re: siera 69gr 223 load

vertical spread was just under 3.5" , horizontal about 7.5" , was fighting the wind had 9.5 moa dialed in windage, 14 moa in elevation ,5 shot group after i got on the plate. On a good note I picked up a can of R15, and a box of cci br4 primers at the shop,

I was starting to look for some starting data for my first 223 loads. There is some very good advice in here!

What RRA AR15 do you have? I have an Elite Operator 2 but have been hesitant to try the 69gr SMKs as I heard you need a 1 in 8 or 7 twist barrel to stabilize them (mine is 1 in 9).
