I recently got a Sig p226 40 in trade. Im not sure yet how I feel about the double single trigger. My friend let me shoot his M&P9 and I really enjoyed shooting it. Would it be worth the trouble to sell the sig and get the M&P or just shoot the sig more and figure out how to shoot it well?

I want this gun to do double duty as a carry piece and for some informal competition

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I am both a Sig and M&P fan, you opinion of the M&P9 might be basis for shooting well since it was in 9mm.

Both are excellent handguns and will serve you well, since the Sig isn't new there's no reason not to go shoot it and see what you think

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I too am a fan of both. I have a Sig 226 Blackwater that I sent to Grey Guns in Oregon. They do fantastic trigger work. They slick up the Double Action, and reduce the reset. I can't express enough about the difference between stock, and afterwards.
I have 2 M&P 9's. One is the Pro, which has a longer 5" barrel and a little nicer trigger from the factory, and the other, I just installed the Apex trigger kit last night. I have high expectations for this one. I can't test it, as the slide is out for Cerakote at the moment.
Either way, DA or Striker fired, they both are great pieces, but can be improved. JPG

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I am a bit of elitist when it comes to handguns, so you can imagine my first choice, beyond a shadow of a doubt, would be anything sig sauer.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

Agreed on the sig holding its value, but comfort is a good logic as well.
.
I've shot the DA/SA sig's A LOT after the first shot they'r real nice an you can do some quality work with'm. Although you can with the DA as well once you get used to it.
.
If its an older sig I'd say hold onto it, however its one of the newer ones which seem to have quality problems I'd consider selling it IF you could get a decent deal.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I to am a fan of sig arms, I my self have a 226 blakwater as well and could not be happier, you could always try a 226 with a DAK trigger if you dont care for the DA/SA, or get the trigger worked on. Other wise the m&P5 might be the right choice. Also have you looked at the springfield Xd models.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I have a P226 in .40 and find it a challenge to shoot well. I'm a novice pistol shooter however and hope with lots of dry firing and shooting reduced loads for a while I will develop the technique to shoot it. I decided to stick with the Sig rather than trade out for something else.

I believe your P226 is newer, the rail is a big giveaway.

I vote for keep the Sig; and unless you need a carry gun you can depend on RTFN, put off the M&P.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

If it has a date code on it you can also figure out the year on it: http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211928
.
But the rail is give away that is one of the newer models. Keep an eye on it and it make sure you do lube it. The contact points should have a "shimmer" of lube on them. Sigs are a lil more delicate than something like a Glock that only requires 5 drops. Its nice to have a tight gun but they need to be kept slick to avoid issues.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I like Sigs, but I use my M&P 40c as a cc. That's my preference, and if it comes down to a practical carry gun that I know how to operate, fits my hand naturally, and doesn't require any thought to pull the trigger (I don't like DA/SA triggers); versus one that I'm less comfortable with and won't carry, I'll take the one that I will carry with me. Pick whichever one of those fits your criteria.

That one should be fine.

German frame, "SIGARMS" slide...should be a pre-Cohen gun (when they really went to shit).

You must not be too much of an elitist, then...

Personally, this would be a no-brainer. DA/SA is the pits. Dump it and get a striker fired or single action gun.

Re: Sig 226 40 or M&P 40

I have and shoot both.. from the old school da/sa Is all we had for years-.. yep sonny right after revolvers which came about the same time as single action... blessed be the 1911 ... amen ...

Anyway, shoot em both in 40 then make your choice... I have both and feel the Sig is a bit more precise... just .02

Don't think you are going to be hurt either way but not fair to compare 40 to a 9
