Hi guys, I just got a Sig 556 last year, and I'm kinda wanting something different. Since this gun ban craze, I can't find an AR I like for cheap. I was wondering if I could buy an AR upper to put on my Sig 556 lower?

Nope. Not possible in any way, shape, or form.

I have both platforms, and they're proprietary. The only parts that work cross-platform are magazines, commercial stocks, and flash hiders.

This is why I sold my piston ar in favor of a milspec DI gun. Sure there are marginally better platforms being introduced, but are they standardized? How about part availability? (well, barring some kind of buying frenzy...) Affordability and ubiquity of parts and general ownership?

If the military adopted the scar or another similar piston platform id be all over it, but I dont see them dropping the ar platform in the next 10-20 years.

Even after that, its still an excellent and proven weapon system.

The Sig 556 is based on the 55x series, basically a take on their Swiss offerings. They also offer the 516 which is AR based. The 516 is still piston driven, but most parts are standardized with other AR variants. Sig also offers the M400, which is DI and basically completely standardized. I guess you could say they have a flavor for every taste.

With the Sig 556, aside from the obvious problem of the lower physically lining up with an AR upper, you have to take into account that the 556 doesn't have a traditional buffer like an AR. The buffer system on the 556 is contained ahead of the bolt in the buffer tube that rides on top of the barrel. So even if you could somehow solve the problem of the lower and upper mating, you still wouldn't have a buffer system, or any place for the BCG to travel into upon firing.

Alright, thanks for the info. I like the piston system, it just adds more weight than what I wanted. I should've saved some money and bought a DPMS Recon.
