Will one with regular ball ammo be accurate out to 500yds? Been thinking of gettin a semi auto rifle, but dont want something that will only be good <300yds.

Short answer...No. I've had my 556 for about 6 months now and put nearly 2000 rounds through the gun. Overall, i couldn't be more happy. I know no one will believe me, but i haven't had a single malfunction or jam in my gun. Not one. I didn't think that was possible, but the piston system is just that reliable.
Now, as far as range shooting, I've shot mine out to around 600 yards(plinking rocks). I've got a Vortex 4x12x40 on the weapon. As much as i've wanted it to be, this gun simply isn't a long range gun. With XM193, i can punch 3-3.5 inch groups at 100 yards. That's no tack driver, but it's accurate enough to have fun with. I wasn't happy with that though, so i started reloading for it. The aggressive barrel twist definitely favors a heavy bullet. I also wanted to shoot a whitetail with gun, so i wanted a heavy/accurate load. I don't want to get into the ethics of hunting with a 22 caliber bullet, but i will say that my 70 gr TSX dropped a decent little 4x4.
I reloaded 70 gr Barnes TSX bullets and 60 gr V-Max bullets. With the reloads, i can consistently shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards, but not any better(also 1" groups with 70 gr Hornady TAP). The farthest i've shot on paper is 300, which it did hold 3" groups. If you are looking for a tack driver, you'll need something with a longer, heavier barrel. If 1 MOA is good enough for you, you can expect amazing reliability with this weapon. It's really just personal preference.

Not looking for a tack driver. Just want something that could hit a 100% size ipsc target out to 500yds reliably. If it will hold 1.5 min to 300yd and still hit a ipsc at 500yds, I would be happy with that.

With the heavier bullets, it held 1 MOA out to 300, i imagine it would hold it out to 500. I bought mine at Impact guns. They've got good prices.

Cheaper Than Dirt has decent deals on them too sometimes. If you can find it around a grand, your doing good.

You MAY be lucky enough to find a Sig 556 that will hold 1.5 MOA to 500 with the right ammo, but I wouldn't count on it. And definitely not with ball ammo. I have two 556 SWATs and a 556 DMR. At best, the 556 SWATs are a shade under 2.0 MOA rifles at 100 yd in my hands, even with Black Hills or Federal GMM 77 gr ammo. With ball ammo, you're talking more in the range of 2.5-3.0 MOA at 100 yd. I'm a regular at two Sig oriented websites and although there are a few exceptions, these seem to be petty standard results among most other Sig 556 owners I've talked with. The DMR will hold 1.0-1.2 MOA to 400 yd (as far as I've tried it) with BH or FGMM 77 gr. But it has a heavy 21" 10-twist barrel, which is really not considered optimal for the longer (heavier) loads.
Bottom line, I love my Sig 556s; they are absolutely reliable and a lot of fun to shoot. But 500 yd, 1.5 MOA rifles they are not. IMO, the main reason is the trigger. Both my SWATs have a very long pull and heavy (~8.2 lb pull). That's not so conducive to the type of shooting you're looking to do. Unfortunately, there are currently no aftermarket triggers for Sig 556s. Also, the barrel gets pretty thin and whippy from the gas block to the muzzle, so heating and POI shift can also be an issue. If you can find someone that has one and will let you send a few rounds through it, I would strongly recommend you try one before buying to see if it will actually do what you want. That would be a fairly expensive purchase if it won't give you what you're looking for.

I wanna say that Sig only gurantees 3MOA @ 100yds. Accurate guns they're not, but they are reliable.

+1 Almost all of the ones I have seen at my gun club are 1.5"-2.0" at 100 yards with 69 or 77 grain SMK's,some worse. My 556 will ony shoot 52 grain SMK's under 1.5". From the SIG 556 Forum the postings there seem to indicate they are quite variable in gun to gun accuracy. I wouldn't count on getting on that meet your requirements.

I have a 556 Swat that I have also put around 1500 rounds through without a single malfunction. The platform is sweet, but the folding stock and the 16" barrel make it a combat rifle, not a DMR. That being said, the gun is way more accurate than I would have guessed.
There is an unbelievable amount of bias towards the Sig rifles on this site. The rifle will shred a golf ball at 100 yds., and if I have it clamped onto a shooting table, it just doesn't change a whole lot at 300 yds. But it's strength is it's reliability.
I will replace my barrel with a 22-24" barrel here very shortly, and I'm considering a caliber change as well. In my mind, I have the most reliable platform out there and now I can build the accuracy to be whatever I want it to be.
Don't shy away from the gun. It's truly an awesome weapon.

The 556, sounds sort of like what Im looking for. Is their a similar "battle" style rifle out their in 5.56 that doesnt have the rearward pistol grip? Reason I ask because in Ca, witht the rear pistol grip, it makes in an "assault weapon", and then you have to have a bullet button and 10 round mags, were as if no pistol grip, it doesnt fall under the exemption. Thanks

Ditto the short answer. I use mine for urban tactical classes and after several thousand rounds have never had a failure to feed/fire. (except for those nasty bright orange plastic rounds that show up from time to time)
I will slap some elses' M-4 mags in and what ever they are shooting works in my weapon as well. The front end is a bit heavy and that can wear on you after 5-6 hours but the trade off is that I don't have to keep lubing my weapon all day to keep it running. I have other rifles for the 500+ yard stuff but I'm glad I own this one too. Sorry to hear you live in California BTW-might want to do something about that.
