Hey y’all, I’m new to the ‘hide and in the process of setting up my sapr. I picked up a Sig 716 g2 dmr in 6.5 Creedmore a few months ago and slowly paying my way towards a complete set up. I figured I would set it up for long range but in reality most of the plinkin I’m able to do is >500yrds, If that. I will only be using the rifle for target shooting.

I’ve got my supressor on order ( in atf jail ) , I figured since it takes a great while to jump thru the hoops Is get that out of the way and then focus on glass afterwards. Which is the point I’m at now. I’m trying to decide which scope would suit me and the rifle best. I’d like to keep the price around 1k give or take but naturally my taste exceeds my budget. Ive narrower it down to a first focal in Mil’s and for it to be illuminated but am stuck on which power to get.
I had been looking at the Sig Tango6 3-18 with the dev-l reticle which I feel would be a better overall “range” for what the gun is capable of but love the look of the Tango6t 1-6 but have doubts it would be under powered and since the 7.62 extended range reticle is kind of close to the reticle style I like I can’t help but think the holdovers would be inaccurate on my 6.5cm

I also like some of the nightforce scopes and or course the gen2 razor but even used they are a bit out of my price range. I was also looking at the Athlon Ares 4.5-30, but don’t think I need a 30but I definitely want some quality glass. Id love to find one in FDE but am aware there isn’t alot of options in that department and more specifically in my price range.

I was hoping someone would have some insights or recommendations, suggestions or criticisms.

How did that thing shoot?

Look at the Brownells MPO 3-18. Solid optic and right on your price line.

I’ve only got a few hundred rounds thru it so far. It didnt like some of the cheaper ammo (ftf & fte) but ate up hand loads and match grade without hesitation. I’ve read they need a “break in” period before they’ll cycle the low grain and cheaper target ammo but with decent loads it ripped and was on point.
So far I like it but was borrowing a supressor and scope so really need to get myself some glass for it so I can get some more range time and dial it in and put some more rounds thru it

I’ll take a look at that brownells, thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve never looked through one, but I’ve been interested in Tract’s Toric scopes. People over in the scope section seem to have good things to say about them.

A member on here named @koshkin is a wealth of knowledge about all of this. I would recommend looking at his website (https://opticsthoughts.com/) and finding his posts in the rifle scopes section.

The Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30 is an excellent scope and IMHO the best in its price range ($1000). Glass is nice and clear. Ive had one since its release, its been shot on many rifles and AR's, hasn't missed a beat. Tracks great. Give Doug @gr8fuldoug a shout @ Cameraland. He will get you taken care of...

Thanks Padom, that’s one of the scopes I was looking into and had watched some videos on how good the tracking was on it and in the video they compared it to the razor gen 2...? Obviously it’s not on the same level but any truth behind that comparison?

Lasley - I’ll shoot you a pm, that’s the scope I was borrowing so wouldn’t hurt to get some more info on it from you.

Thanks guys!

I have many scopes here, including the Athlon Ares ETR, 2x Athlon Cronus BTR, Gen1 Razor, Gen2 Razor. No, its not the Gen2 Razor. But, the glass is very clear, and the scope runs great. I have zero complaints, zero problems with it. I actually run my Athlon Cronus BTR's MIL APRS1 4.5-29 more than anything. I just love that reticle and that scope is pretty much equal to my Gen2 Razor... The Ares ETR is not far off but you do have some tunneling at 30x magnification which is why I say its not equal to a Gen2 or Cronus BTR.

I did run it side by side with a Gen2 Viper PST.....Sent the Gen2 PST back that same day without mounting it.... I would buy the Ares ETR over it every day, all day and on Sunday.. Just my $0.02 its the best scope for $1000

I run an Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30; as already mentioned it’s fabulous especially for the price point.
Also have a Steiner P4xi 4-16 on a rifle and am really happy with that as well.

Can’t go wrong with either of those options in my opinion.

OP, not sure if you chose a reticle yet. I saw your thread because I just bought a 716 G2 DMR in 6.5 Creed yesterday, walked into my range and saw it sitting in their glass case and decided I couldn't pass it up as I've been looking for a good piston large frame - hopefully it shoots as good as it looks. You can often find great deals on Leupold Mark 5 3.6-18x44 scopes these days. At $2000 they were too much but below $1500 they are a good deal and Cabela's had a sale not too long ago under $1k, so keep an eye out, not a big fan of their reticles but that is personal preference. Tract Toric 4-20 is a great albeit heavy scope for a 30mm, love their new PRS reticle and outside of CA the glass was really nice, probably one of the best for the price. If you can find a used Burris XTR III 3.3-18x50 this scope is phenomenal, my only gripe is the SCR2 reticle is super thin, but some like that.

I ended up grabbing the new Tango6 3-18x44 with the dev l reticle. Haven’t had a chance to take it for a test drive yet and don’t have a lot of experience with too many other scopes but it seems like it’s going to be pretty sweet on my 716. It was one of the few I was actually able to check out in person and have some hands on it so I knew what to expect when buying it.

Congrats on your new dmr, Welcome to the club! They’re great guns and kick ass in 6.5! What scope are you leaning towards putting on it?

I had an F&D Defense years ago that I reviewed, it was an amazing rifle but was concerned about how small they were and how proprietary everything was (if they went under then I was out of luck) but that rifle was the most accurate piston rifle I've seen. I've gone through numerous DI large frames but have really wanted to find an accurate piston rifle - really hope this one is a shooter.

I really like the DEV-L reticle and the Tango6 is supposed to be a really nice LOW design so you should be happy with that.

Most likely I will move my ZCO ZC420 over to the 716, I think it'll be a nice match.

You guys are really scoping up these 716s. Mine wears a NF2.5-10 and has happily worn a SWFA SS3-9. If you are expecting long range and super precision, it is the wrong platform for you.
On the break-in issues, remember you have an adjustable gas system, that can help. Also, large AR platforms are notoriously picky during break-in, don't skimp on the lube.
Once you get the rifle broken in and have a favorite ammo picked, they are a great intermediate platform. Mine is a 308 so the 6.5s have more reach, maybe; but - again - be mindful of the intended purpose. These are plenty accurate for gassers, but if you want tiny groups beyond 600, save yourself the frustration and sell it now.

If you are expecting long range and super precision, it is the wrong platform for you.

Not sure what your definition of long range and super precision is, but my previous large frame AR's in 6.5 Creedmoor were more than capable of ringing steel out to 1000 yards and that is my hope from the 716... I don't plan to shoot a semi-auto in any kind of benchrest or F-Class style match, but hitting 1.5 MOA to 2 MOA sized steel plates beyond 600 yards is what I am hoping for with the Sig 716. My SPR in 5.56 can ring steel consistently at 550y, it's almost boring, the hope with the large frame is to extend beyond the effective range of 5.56. Yes, the gas guns tend to be more finicky than bolt rifles for sure, but saying that a large frame gas gun is the wrong platform for long range needs some context because they should be more than capable of long range for hitting steel.

That's fair. It'll have more range and more ass than a 556 of comparable setup. And planning for 2 MOA is reasonable, but would fall under what I would consider less-than super precision. Likewise, with an 18" barrel, it won't be setting any extreme distance records, probably.

Often people want bolt gun accuracy and reliability in a gasser, and that is almost never the case.

My post was to the OP rather than to you personally. My suggestion was to set the gun up for what it is made to do (semi-precision to medium range) and, as such, I think my original post rings true.
