Read all the FAQ's, searched and found a ton of threads about what base is needed for what scope, but nothing to explain what the importance of sight height is. What changes as you change the sight height? I assume most want there scope mounted low for "the look" or a check weld without a riser. Thanks for helping me understand this.

Re: Sight height importance?

Cheek weld is the only area I have found important in relation to height over bore of my scope.

Some people may have different opinions, but I feel that DOPE is DOPE, and height over bore only needs to be consistent.

Re: Sight height importance?

Don't worry about height over bore when setting up a rifle. Worry about cheek weld. The reason we go as low as possible on a traditional bolt gun is because of the drop at the comb. The higher the scope, the more you have to build up the comb.

Height over bore is not usually an issue on an AR platform or other fully adjustable stock. Systems like the AW/AE/AICS need taller rings because of the height of the comb.

Height over bore does have an impact on dope, but it is minimal and accounted for in most ballistics programs.

Re: Sight height importance?

Thanks guys for helping me wrap my mind around it. I was messing with my ballistics program and noticed what a big difference sight height make at longer ranges and being in the middle of getting a new scope and picking bases and rings i thought i better understand it all. I know that cheek weld is far more important but i wanted to see if there was part of the story i was missing. Now i know i can just worry about cheek weld and sight picture.
