Gents,

I compared the SIII 10x42 Tac with the SIII 3.5-10x44, with both at 10x.

The 10x42 Tac has the optics you expect from the SIII LR series. The sight picture does not suffer from tunnel vision, the eye relief is not fussy holding the scope for the bay window review, so behind a rifle it should be easy to acquire and hold. The fit and finish are superb. The rear parallax is very smooth and goes down to 10 yards!! The focus worked to 1200 yards + with ease. The turrets are 1/4moa (sigh) but are very crisp in their clicks with nearly zero slop. Well marked turrets.

Curiously, no tethered lens caps of any kind so get the BC caps. 16eye and eith 30obj or 31obj. 30obj is very tight but won't slide all the way on the bell, only about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way. 31obj slides all the way on but is not super tight....I would go 31obj.

The reticle has extra hashes in between the dots for added ranging and holdover precision. The spacing between each dot and hash is 1-mil. The reticle is 20mils tall by 20mils wide, twice as much as a standard mildot.

The reticle is *very* well finished wire, but it is wire. Not etched glass. It can reflect brassy in the right lighting conditions.

Overall, these scopes represent a great opportunity in a fixed power scope, IMO. I'll check out the 16x42 tomorrow.
