This is my first scope purchase and I've narrowed my choices down to the Sightron SIII 6-24x50 and the 8-32x56 (in the MOA reticle). But I can't decide between these two...

I like the lower power 6x for more tactical/hunting purposes, but I'd also like to be able to shoot out to a mile (EVENTUALLY), and not sure if I will need to have higher than 24x for that extreme of a range. If anyone has some actual sight pictures at various ranges, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know if there's a major difference between the tactical knobs and the target knobs?

Jake:

I own two S III's...one is a 8-32X with target knobs and one is a 10-50X...also with target knobs. By asking about the target knobs...I'm assuming you are asking about the 0.1 mil exposed turrets? A quick answer would be that the 1/8 moa target knobs will give you a finer adjustment per click at range. It also takes a bunch more clicks when dialing in for long range...which can get you messed up when going back to zero. Also, you have to deal with the turret caps.

You are going to get more internal elevation adjustment with the 6-24X...which they list as 100. The 8-32x is listed at 70. So it will depend on how big of target you want to shoot at long range. The internal adjustment differences can easily be offset with a canted base.

Both will have really decent glass and turrets. Exposed tactical turrets are a fast and convenient way to dial in dope. The target turrets really work well to fine tune the shot....for bench rest shooting as an example.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Wayne,
Thanks for the info. Here's the difference in the knobs I was referring to. But they both list 1/4 MOA click adjustments, not 1/8.

8-32x56

Between the 6-24x and the 8-32x. which would you recommend for my purposes? At the close range, I plan to do some hunting (probably about 100-300 yards I would guess). At the long range (1,000 yards up to a mile), I'll just be doing some recreational target practice (but no plans to enter competitions or anything like that).

What are the conditions that you'll be hunting in? Reason I ask.....100-300 yards in an open pasture vs a lightly wooded and hilly area are two different scenario's. Having said that...I've hunted with both a 8-32x scope and a 6-24x. Hunting purists will say negative things about either choice...most say 3-9x or 4.5-14x is more than anybody will ever need.

If you have your heart set on 1K+...I'd recommend the 8-32x and get a good canted base....20 moa.... should help get you to where you want to go. Hunting at 100 yards with 8x on the bottom is do-able....but not ideal. This is a situation that you'll have to understand....there isn't a perfect choice between the two. The only "Near Perfect" scope for your needs would be one of the tactical scopes from March...either the 2.5-25X or the 5-32x....but they are very spendy.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Re: Sightron SIII SS 6-24x50 or 8-32x56?

the March scopes look nice! but yeah.. they are kinda pricey...

As for hunting conditions, I'd like to be able to hunt in various conditions. I'm in CA, so we have heavier wooded areas in the central/northern region, and more dry open areas in the south. I would eventually like to get out to 1k+ yards, but maybe I should focus on improving my shots at closer range first and then work my way up. Maybe upgrade later if necessary. Okay, I think I'm probably going to go with the 6-24x for now then. Thanks for your help!

In the moa reticle that center dot is 1/4moa on 24x, that is about 4 1/2" at a mile. Now on 32 power that center dot is smaller.
I use the 8-32x56 in mil dot for coyote hunting, I've shot several this year under 30yards.

I'd go 8-32

Get the one you want. Then get a Nikon 3x9 prostaff to hunt with.

For about $170.00 you can get a good hunting scope.

I've got two SIII 6 x 24 x 50 moa 2 scopes I use on my 1000 yard comp guns, for that purpose they're great, but for a hunting rifle it's a pretty large scope, at least if going to be packing it around all day.

I hunt and target shoot with a 6-24 and it's perfect for me. If your doing more hunting than target shooting you might consider a weaver tactical 3-15x50 also.
