Monolithic Munitions has prototyped a 14.9mm rifle. Ammo is made from 20mm Vulcan brass, necked down using Warner Tool Company Custom dies.

Looks a lot like a .50 "Fat Max" I think it was called. I have a few 20mm parts lying around in my "Someday" pile.

A curious "what if".

That's a butt load of powder in that thar case. Since it's on your garage floor, I figure you're involved with Monolithic.
How many grains is that bullet and how many grains powder, and MV ?

Couple more questions:
What's the recoil in ft-lbs
Specs: Weight, barrel length, twist rate, effective range, MSRP ?
Think you could do a sabot of 338 depleted uranium and get 10K fps?
How many shots before the throat is completely gone, 100 ?

The rifle was a prototype by a former SnipersHide member. If I remember correctly the barrel alone was 70 lbs. and 48 inches long. Here is the story behind the rifle and cartridge:

I think you are right excaliber. These pics look just like some in the saojao thread that someone just resurrected this week in this section. If not its awful coincidental. Will be interesting to follow and see if its the same folks and project.

My only question is why did they cut the case down? Should have left it full 20mm length. anzio iron works is making a 50x20mm.

waste of time, money, hard to find a place to shoot the thing, loud as fuck, poor barrel life, heavy and uncomfortable to shoot, no real applicable purpose other than drawing attention to yourself at the range....I can think of more. Just because you can, doesnt mean you should or that its a good idea. But hey, blow your hair back and ear drums out....Its what makes this country great. Personally, If you pulled up next to me at the range with that thing, id pack up and leave.

Since the guy hasn't posted on his blog since July 2012 something must have gone wrong. Probably the same thing that happens when solid projectiles are too long, they won't work.

I believe it is a full length case. The projo just makes it look short. If you look at it vs the .50BMG....... iirc the case is based on the 20x102mm, ie 102mm long. The BMG is a 99mm case, or 12.7x99mm.

If it is the gun from the previous thread I want to see video of it firing. I'd also like to see if it could actually hit the 5000m mark as was being described.

I am doing something a little different, I am making a 50cal 20mm. Same case like the anzino ironworks. It is still over a year out but here are some teaser photos. And like others have mentioned before, I have no practical reason to have it. But for me, just designing it and figuring out how to make it is really the fun part for me.

Holy Crap!!!

They still make Diet Cherry 7-Up?!?!?!

On a serious note, good luck with your project. Push the limits because you can and you want to. Don't worry about those that don't want to asking "why?".

Thanks for the support. My gun is going to have hydraulic extending legs that are on guide rails and springs to help keep it straight during recoil.

Dylanss180, thanks for posting! :)

If you can, please give us some more details on the sliding bipod assembly.

Are you going to use some kind of recoil absorber for the butt?

What bullets are you planning to use?

as a machinist I can say- that is a lot of work right there. Very very cool though. Id like to see it when your done.

I'd like to see how well it groups. Is it actually accurate enough for hitting 55 gallon drums at 2000 meters and beyond?

The bipod assembly is mounted to a tube that has .125" clearance between the bipod tube and the barrell shroud. On the barrel shroud there are two mounts that have guide bushings in them for two 5/8 rods. If you look at the photo you will see two rods that are used to guide the floating bipod tube. That will be the way it works. There will also be springs mounted to it so it will return to position after firing. I am going to try it without a hydraulic dampener first. If the recoil isn't excessive I will not use one. Otherwise I will put one in the butt of the gun.

As for bullets I am making my own. I made one a few weeks back that didn't work. I will try again soon. The bullet design is from a forum member here on the hide that i am making. It isn't close to right yet. (I am making the bullets on a mill). The bullet on the left is the hornady 750 a max. The new one will be a little over 1000 grains.

I hope it shoots good. I don't know until I actually get it working.

Some more teaser photos.

I tried making the bullets again today. this time I got it. It weighs 998.7 grains

Dylanss180, are you doing all the machine work?
I see you are an engineer, did you design the rifle?
I can also see parts for a few rifles, do you plan to sell them?
What king of software (or experience/intuition) did you use to design the bullet?
What barrel are you using, rifling profile and twist?

Yes I am doing all the machine work
Yes I designed the rifle.
I am making a few. If you are in the manufacturing business you would understand that things can go bad during manufacturing. Making a few extra and have one fall out is better than having to start all over and setup the machines again.
Like I mentioned before the bullet was designed by another hide member.
I am still picking out the barrell. but it will be a 1:10 twist.

Prototype looks like it needs some flush cups.

Plenty of places out West to shoot. National Forests allow any weapon, and the distances can be crazy long.
