Re: Sinclair Bump gauge vs Hornady LNL headspace gauge
The Sinclair has a cone shape to it, Pete had one and it would .007 longer after resizing for the case to chamber, just buy the Hornady, simple easy repeatable.
Re: Sinclair Bump gauge vs Hornady LNL headspace gauge
I have Hornady. I like it. Very quick and easy. A nice additional purchase is the HS gage for your cartridge. That way you can zero on the HS gage, and reference that. Not required, but nice.
Re: Sinclair Bump gauge vs Hornady LNL headspace gauge
I've used the Hornady LnL comparators for both headspace and seating depth since they were Stoney Point. They never let me down, but the radius on the edges of the holes always bugged me a little. Definitely a little bit of wiggling involved to get things seated when measuring, at least for me. Note that is a 'little' bit, not using the calipers as a graduated C-clamp
Over the last couple years I've been migrating to the Sinclair inserts. Using a tapered hole that mimics the rifling leade angle (~1.5 degree) in your throat makes sense to me. For headspace, the tapered hole should match the shoulder angle of your desired cartridge. In theory it should be more consistent than a simple ring that bears on only at one diameter around the circumference of the case shoulder. In reality, I'm not sure it makes that much difference; at least not that I can tell. I'm not sure what that line from 427Cobra is supposed to mean; with either one I measure from a fired case and set the die to bump the shoulder back 0.001-0.002 - and everything is good from there (for me). The Hornady inserts are generally cheaper and quick/easy to use - nothing wrong with 'em.

I believe it was peculiar to my specific Sinclair insert. After F/L resizing, the shoulder would actually travel into the insert giving the false reading of a decrease in length when in fact the opposite was true. He discovered the problem with a side-side with his Hornady comparator. I must say the Sinclair is more robust in it's material make-up but I've stuck with the Hornady. I've been tempted to get another Sinclair to see if the problem was with that particular insert.
Re: Sinclair Bump gauge vs Hornady LNL headspace gauge
Pete, I am having the same problem with my Sinclair bump guage. They sent me another and it does the same thing. What die where you using to fl size with?
