Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

I acquired a used Sinclair 3000 neck turning tool.

Trying to figure out how to set the cutting blade. It is spring loaded. What is the long screw in the opposite side used for? How does one precisely set the cutting blade to a specific depth?

Thanks

Re: Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

Loosen the set screws and push it in against a feeler guage of the correct thickness. That'll get you in the ball park.

Which version is it? Can you post a photo? Or find it on Sinclair's web site. I have 2 different Sinclair versions. Maybe I can be more specific. Send me an email if you need more help.

Re: Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

I beleive its the the Sincliar 3000.

A feeler gauge would work. THe spring behind the cutter is strong, and not easy to to hold were you want, while tightening the set screw. Feeler gauge would hold it. I am thinking the large screw must be there to help set the the depth of the cutter, but does not seem to.

I will email some pics.

Re: Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

I wouldn't take the chance of dulling a cutter with a feeler gage. I take a light cut, measure the neck thickness where it's been cut and set the cutter down from that.

With all neck turners start with the cutter too far out and ONLY move it in. If you need to reduce the cut, start over.

Re: Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

I use a feeler guage all the time. But handle it however you wish.

Another helpful hint is to use range brass or Berdan primed brass. I pick up brass before I leave the range. Berdan brass is still good for setting the neck turner.

Good luck.

Re: Sinclair Neck Turning Adjustment

I would second Victor's suggestion on using range brass to get the initial adjustment of your neck turner close. After ruining some new brass by cutting the necks to thin.... i closed up the box of Lapua and got out some old stuff. Also use a quality lube on the neck turning mandrel, and you may want to look into purchasing an expander mandrel to get a good fit with your turner. There should be better instructions on use and adjustment available on the net, or perhaps in the Hide archives.
