I am shopping around to have my first tatical rifle built. I had asked members on this site who I should use a gunsmith. I followed their advise and spoke to a few of the gunsmiths on site. One that interests me is Skunkworks. I spent about a half an hour on the phone with Mike and found him to really know his rifles. I am interested in having him build one of his Recons in a credemor (sp?)per his recomendations. This caliber is also new to me. Looking for something that would be accurrate out to 600 yards+

Does any one have one of his rifles? How do you like it ? How accurate? Likes and dislikes? What about the caliber he is recomending? Only down fall at this time is I am not very excited about having my receiver saying skunk on it.

How does his rifles compare to GA and others? Any help/ ideas/ sugestions, pro/cons would be greatly appreciated before I spend a lot of money.

Thanks to all of you. David

Re: Skunkworks Recon

You have spoken with one of the best in the business--dont waste their time or yours with the newcomer questions--do your research
all the smiths on the Hide did not get here by accident--they
are at the top of their field--as for a gunsmiths logo on your
rifle--be proud--especially when you sell it--the big name logos
get the most return on your investment--I learned this years ago
when shooting unlimited 1911's in competition--when you go to sell it is very hard to get $$ from a custom gun unless done by a highly respected and well-known individual/firm--ask about lead
times and customer service--how soon do you want it--they are all
accurate or would not be listed here--the caliber is a great one
as are many others

Re: Skunkworks Recon

I could'nt have said it any better then what BERTMAN77MK2
said. I just got my SPS back from Mike and I'm proud to have his stamp on the side of my gun. Plus his work is A+.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

Mike is building me a custom hunting rig in 7mm Mag.

His customer service & patience with all my questions were top-notch, can't wait until my rifle is finished!!!

If you do a search on here, you'll see the rifles Mike has been putting out - BAD ASS!!!

I couldn't agree more with both of these statements. After talking with Mike for a short while it was obvious who was going to build my rifle. He is very nice, patient, knowledgeable, and will go above and beyond to make sure everything is right. Not to mention his communication is second to none.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

Mikes rifles are very accurate. You definitely can't wrong with Mike. My skunkworks built rifle is amazing. The attention to detail he puts into his rifles is incredible. I'm just jealous I didn't get a skunkworks logo on mine. I guess no room on a m2008 for it. His communication is great on top of the amazing rifles he puts out. You should definetly search on here for his threads and look at his rifles. If I remember correctly he posted the group sizes him an his father got with mine in that thread.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

I too just put an order in for one of his rifles last week. he is building one of his infidel rifles chambered in 300 win mag for me. Mike is a top notch guy and I couldn't be happier doing business with him. I can't wait to get my rifle from him but one thing is for sure... his rifles are awesome.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

I am also on Mikes list for 2 builds and i will wait as long as it takes to get 1. He has answered all questions and consernes in a very short time when i had them and not to mention steer me in the right direction in building me 2 functional and usable rifles for the intended purposes that they are going to be used. My hat is off to the mad scientist burning the candle at both ends to give us some great stuff. Class and perfection is all that i have seen from him. SkunkWorks, how cool is that. When i get 1 in my hands i will know i really have something.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

I don't have any of Skunkworks' rifles myself, but it's a very reputable shop. I would however think long and hard over a 6.5 creedmore build, especially if you're just starting out. It seems from your questions that you're fairly new to all this and if that's the case, I'd go with a more common cartridge so you can spend more time shooting and less time trying to find ammo. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever Skunkworks builds for you, but get something that you can find ammo for in copious amounts and at a decent price. A gun that's either too expensive to feed, or too hard to find ammo for, isn't a very useful rig IMHO. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Skunkworks Recon

I don't own a Skunk yet, but when my money is right, I will be going through Mike. His stuff is the most top-notch as I've seen. check out a couple of the recent threads in the bolt action rifles page.

I do however have a Creedmoor. If you want to be accurate at 600+ yards, It's not going to be cheap no matter what round you go with and the factory match Hornady ammo is amazing and it's about $23-$25 per box of 20 which is much cheaper than the good .308 stuff. It is a new cartridge but is becoming very popular. The big question is do you reload?

I reload for mine and I haven't had any problem finding all the components.
