I've got a 24" heavy barreled 204 AR with a 3-15 nightforce on top of it

this rig is HEAVY with a standard butler creek synthetic sling

the stock is a collapsible vltor with the quick release button and a regular front swivel stud under the forearm

anyway my right shoulder kills me after short hikes carrying this thing

I'm not gonna change uppers to lighten my load

I need a different sling configuration to balance the weight somehow

so what do you suggest?

Re: sling for heavy AR

I have had pretty good results running a tactical sling that allows me to run my rifle across my front and tightening it down. An example would be a VTAC sling.

As a near professional at carrying heavy shit all over the world, heavy rigs hurt. Either lighten the load or embrace the suck.

Good luck.

Re: sling for heavy AR

How about a biatholon set up? Distribute the weight on your back and let two shoulders carry the load rather than just one. I have a tab one and it does wonders. Bolt gun is 14lbs and I have no problem carrying it.

Re: sling for heavy AR

Joey, how's the biathlon sling when attached to the bottom of a rifle vs the side? I don't have flush cups on my stock, so I'm just curious about them.

Re: sling for heavy AR

I like the VTAC slings. I use the padded and non padded. Padded for the heavier rifles, they are very adjustable and allows you to carry in any position you can think of.

Re: sling for heavy AR

I like the Vickers VCAS, I have both the non and padded version.

The Magpul sling is noisey from all the metal hardware and its narrow webbing is tough on the shoulders. Not a issue if you are using it over armor.

I don't like the Viking Tactical sling due to the extra webbing (tail) that hangs free as you adjust the sling.

Re: sling for heavy AR

I like the padded Vtac, Larue and the Troy. All of mine are two point with QD swivels. The Troy sling has the widest/thickest pad and a built in bungee section to reduce shock while moving. So far I'm really liking the thicker wider Troy with my heavy ass, overscoped P308

The Vtac and Larue are a little easier to quickly adjust.

Out of the three I do have I like the Troy the best for a heavy AR

It is long as hell, I don't even think it would fit a Barrett 50 the way it comes it so long. Cut it and melt the cut to keep it from fraying.

This is what I did.
