Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

Barely would be what Clint has too. The only thing left on his that is actually a Ruger, is the original receiver. Nothing else, and I mean NOTHING else is Ruger.

Yes, the 10/22 Target is what I am planning on getting. It is a brand new rifle, so we will see. These things are not as cheap as the one that I used to have. I bought my old one for $100, and sold it for $125. I guess I am paying for that one now... LOL!!

If the deal falls through, I will probably end up with one of the new Tacticool Savages. As I am a Savage guy anyway...

DK

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

Well, the deal fell through on the Ruger Target rifle. I am now looking really hard at a Savage 64 TRR-SR. Looks great, and has the 16-1/2" barrel that is supposed to be the best overall length for the most velocity.

I just know that I am wanting a lights out performer, so I won't be inclined to blame my failures on the thing slingin the lead...

DK

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

Well, as it turns out, I am the proud owner of a new Savage 64 TRR-SR rimfire rifle in .22lr. I will have to get her all put together with her "bling" goin on, and I will get some pics posted.

I am really hoping that this stick ends up performing like most Savage's normally do... so we will see!! I can't hardly wait to get it completed. Bring on them little Smiley's!!

DK

p.s. - and the anticipation of the outcome of the last go round is building!!

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

It's been a week since the deadline. I am a little anxious to see of my 260-is in the rimfire will hold up.

I shot a respectable 200-ish for centerfire. I will need to put some work in before I am able to be a top echelon competitor for CF. Ironically, in both CF targets that I turned in, I hit the 40 pt Smiley for the confidence shot... those were the only 2 40 pt confidence shots that I have taken. I had the perfect target that would have done very well. I got nervous and went for the 30 pt... and missed.

In fact, I have found that whenever I get nervous, I tense up and miss the shot. I had an awesome RF target and ended up hitting the edge of the circle of the 40 pt smiley... it wasn't even close. It was the largest miss I have made yet. With 9 perfect shots in front of it. They can't all be winners.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

I have no doubt that you will be settling in somewhere up the list. You are one of the more consistant shooters I have seen here. Some of you guys kill me that you never have a bad day!!

I personally am in the middle of a struggle. I am changing around equipment, loads, barrel lengths... almost everything. I got way spoiled on my old 10FPLE. I honestly thought I could get something close to it again with the 10PC. However, they are WAY different rifles in every way.

I actually managed to shoot a .402" 5-shot group on Saturday. All the rest of the groups went everywhere up to 1.282" 5-shot group. This was all while testing out some specific loads that I am working up for the 10PC, but the shorter barrel and radial brake is a loud, dirt kickin, shoulder bangin SOB.

My shoulder don't like the recoil either with the lighter rifle. Even with the brake on it, the 18-1/2" barrel is a brute. I kinda wish I went ahead and had the surgery when I tore up my shoulder a few years ago. I guess I am paying for it now...

The 10PC really seemed to like the lighter loads (as well as my shoulder... LOL), so I will be working back down the scale for the next set to see what she is going to do. Hopefully I will get some of the same at an even lower charge, that would be just fine with me!!

DK

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

And congrats big time on your 40's for the confidence shots!! I won't be joining you anywhere near the top, or even middle for that matter. It was a TERRIBLE day for ALL of us.

The best part of it all though, was getting together with the buddies and the kiddos. I am trying to get the rest of Clint's kiddos to shoot with us as well. Maybe next time we can have them all, and even add some to the bunch.

That is what the good stuff is made of...

</div></div>

I buy 4 targets, so when I am having a bad day, I stop shooting and take it up another day.

One of these days, I am going to get bit on RF. Twice now I have shot 3 targets and missed the 40 pt confidence on every target and both times, I have made the shot on the fourth try. One of these days, I won't be so lucky.

I have also had session where I didn't even shoot all of the targets. I was satisfied with what I had and wanted to conserve my good ammo.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

You are talking about making the hits on your 4th target. At least there WAS a target that it WAS hit on!! Out of every single one of the targets that I normally get to try for the confidence shot, it AIN'T shot at the 40/50 for sure!!

So, I still stand by what I said before. You are one of the most consistant shooters here... PERIOD!! And yes, that was a compliment... accept it!!

DK

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

OK. I will take a compliment. I am a consistent shot. I am pretty good with the short distance stuff and long range RF.

I need to work on my long distance stuff (1,000 yards with a .308). I have a lot of room to improve there. I am also shocked at the improvement I have seen with the .22 at long range. I thought I had hit the wall a while back. I was winning my local comps and the comps on here, but I have managed to improve to a level I didn't think was possible.

Gear is a large part of it, but I am understanding more and more the finer points of mechanics... consistent cheek weld, consistent bipod load, consistent trigger pull. I have to keep telling my rifle, "It's not you, it's me."

The shot where I missed the 40 pt circle was a wake up call. I felt the tension in my body but I pulled the trigger any way. I knew it would have an effect... but not that big of one! I got in a rush to shoot where the wind was just right as opposed to waiting until I had the mechanics right. Big mistake.

And that is the fun of shooting short distance in STS... at these ranges, it is 95% mechanics (at least from a shooting aspect). I still think a large part is the gear and ammo as well, but you are more likely to fail your gear than the other way around.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - ENTRY OPEN!

I have to agree completely about the gear. That is why I am getting a NEW rifle that is supposed to be a nice fly killer, so I will be blaming all my problems on me!! We will see how it goes, and I hope it gets here soon!!

I am selling off a ton of stuff to get this rig set up the way that I want it, and I can't hardly wait to start sending rounds down range with it. The mechanics is definately going to be a major contributor to the outcome. Hope to see you at the top!!

Thanks a ton to JB and all the sponsors for making this happen.
Really appreciate it.

Bill

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS

Thanks JB and all the sponsors and congrats to all the shooters. I have been wanting to try one of the new Sightrons, now I guess I have no excuse not to! Now I must admit, while I would love to have an AW, I used a 700-actioned rifle chambered in 6.5x47L.

Thanks again and I am looking forward to the next round.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Good shooting Bill.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Jason and thanks to the sponsors for their continued generosity to our sport.

Matt

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Thanks to JB and all the sponsors for their time in doing this and for the donations!

Hopefully I can have something better than my Ar15 and 10X scope for my Wife and girls next time and get their names up the list a little more, didn't work to well for them this time. At least they got to shoot all of their targets this time.

Will be sending money for the next batch of targets shortly.

Thanks again.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Once again... congrats to all the shooters for getting those scores up there and screamin!!

JB... As always... You Da Man!! Thanks for everything!!

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Thanks for doing this competition JB, I had alot of fun shooting it, I will be trying my luck again in the fall...Hopefully I will do better...Thanks also to all the sponsors...

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Thanks JB and sponsors, i had a great time shooting it, can't wait for the fall match! As far as prizes are concerned, are the certificates mailed to the raffle winners or do we contact the vendors directly??

Re: Smack the SMILEY - SUMMER 2011 - RESULTS BELOW

Seems like my little 10-22 put up a good fight for rimfire. A score over 200 for me is awesome.

As usual, my centerfire sucked. But, I gots me a brake on it now and my shoulder cries less! Will see what next match brings. I am gunning to do better with centerfire this go round. Rifle works, scope works, and now I work!

Thanks to all the vendors and JB for all the work! I know we all appreciate the work that goes into this.
