Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Definitely in on this one as well. We got a nice blanket of snow, 10" deep at the moment and still coming down. Snow always makes for a great time with the muzzle blast!! LOL

Funds sent, family and friends are looking forward to it yet again. This is one of the most fun things we do, and I hope that it will continue for many years to come!!

Bring on the Snowflakes!! Yeeeeehhhhaaaaaawwwwww!!

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

14 short of the max possible, though I haven't seen the 5 points awarded for centering the 25 point circle since the early days of contest. I don't know if that gets awarded anymore.

If not, then 9 short of max. If only I could shoot CF that well:-( I have a new load now. Hopefully, it will be a better this time around. This year has been dismal for CF for me.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Jason,
The bipod donated by Long Range Accuracy arrived, and I am really impressed. It is a beautifully engineered and built piece of equipment. Thanks again for running this match, and many thanks to LRA for putting this bipod on the prize table!
Cheers,
DC

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Load development for my Predator and Andrea's hunter is looking really good. So hopefully, there will be a bit higher numbers on the score board this time around.

Carter, you simply amaze me. You are definitely one of the most consitant shooters around. My hats off to you Brother. And yes, I agree, that target does belong in the Smiley Hall of Fame!!

Honestly, I find the rimfire to present far more difficulty than the centerfire. However, we will be shooting a buddy of mine's custom Savage MarkII for the rimfire class. Hopefully we can get at least in the same "state", if not the same "ball park".

You know, the main issue I have is with the distance. I use a 15X scope on my rimfire at 50 yards and have no issue seeing exactly where I need to aim. I have a 25X for centerfire at 100, and I can just barely see the small smiley. It is a much more intimidating target at 100 yards.

Plus, it helps that my 22 is just a tack driver and I am using a carefully chosen lot of ammo that it took years for me to find. Not that my Tac Ops isn't accurate, but in comparison to a lot of the 22 rigs out there mine is perfectly set up for this comp.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Not being able to see the Smiley's well at 100, is why I love the 3-shot diamond. I use all 4 points of the diamond to get my shot.

Diamonds... love'em!! Smiley's and circles... not so much.

DK

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

I shot the RF this weekend. I was on fire! Not a personal record, but 3 of the targets I shot were keepers, which is how I gauge whether I am shooting well. One of my very highest scores was after shooting 3 targets where I missed the 40 pt Smiley. Did I shoot well that day? No. I was lucky.

When I hit the 40 pt Smiley 7 times out of 8, I am shooting pretty well.

Now for the CF... I am nervous. Component droughts are giving me all sorts of worries.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Hopefully, me and all the gang will be able to get out and blast the snow around. I am personally looking forward to this one, as everything seems to be lined up and running good!!

Yeeeehhhhaaaawwww!!

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Family and I shot our rimfire targets this last week. Was a good time having everyone out.

Shot the heck out of mine, think I shot a personal best. Over 200 for certain, pretty sure I shot over 220. Will see when the results are posted.

Centerfire is this week coming up. I am nervous as DK is.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Got to shoot my target this weekend. I really stunk it up!

It was the worst I had shot in a good long while with my rimfire. Besides my own shortcomings, I think trying this match right after I had shot 50-60 rounds of 20 gauge at the trap range might have hurt my score.

But hey, it was fun and I'm pretty much guaranteed to get better from here!

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Well, the load testing seemed to have worked out pretty well. However, after you go shooting steel for a while, make sure you re-zero your scope before you shoot your Smiley's... Just sayin.

With that said, the (non) Cold Bore Shot was pretty embarassing. After that, all went pretty well. 3-shot group was turning out to be the best yet, but reality struck. Oh well, no worries.

Andrea was shooting really well, and so did Cassidy. It was a good day, and I hope we can get out and do it again soon!!

Keep up the good work JB, your efforts are appreciated.

Re: Smack the SMILEY - WINTER 2012 - ENTRY OPEN

Well I tried my first STS today and didn't really do all that well. Luckily it isn't based on skill
smile.gif

Forgot my rear bag and was all over the place. And it was Freaking Cold Outside with a pretty good wind.

Well those are my excuses, and my target is back in the mail to JB. Looking forward to the next one.

I did try my rimfire one, but only had a reddot and couldn't hit the side of a barn with it. Really need to scope one and then try it.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Shootnjunky</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Well Forgot my rear bag and was all over the place.</div></div>

Ahhhhh, another "ah-haa" moment provided by the little Smiley's. It is for this reason alone, that I now have a "Smiley List of Gear"... Just sayin.

I can't tell you how many times I have set all my gear out, only to find 1 small piece of the puzzle not laying there with the rifle. The list does come in handy, and it is always followed by... oh yeah, I will need that too!!

DK

Covering the itty bitty 40/50 with the reticle seemed to do the trick this time around. I had already screwed the pooch on my CBS, so I figured "why not". I actually hit the freakin thang on my confidence shot!! I did aiight on the rest of the target, but I was tickled about the 40/50!!

Nice surpise on my end.

DK

Rimfire, of course, is a totally different story. Even with a super nice rifle, it just doesn't seem to matter much. We will have to see what we can do about changing around the ammo to see what each of these rifles likes. Custom 10/22's, and a super nice Savage are all the same in our hands. Oh well, maybe next time around.

Ever tried a CZ? That is what I shot this round and these will be the best targets I have ever sent in!

I hate to say it, but rimfire is a money game. You can buy a rimfire that shoots great consistently, but you have to be willing to pay as much as you would pay for a custom center fire. And most people here won't. Also, quality ammo is a must. I know the folks who are running circles around me on centerfire would be running circles around me on rimfire if they had my equipment.

I am looking forward to results. My targets stink but I am having fun and enjoy seeing the prizes. Thanks for putting in the time for us JB. Nice work. I'll do better next time

I might have to order a rimfire target next time and see what I can do. My Anschutz's have silhouette scopes on them though and have pretty big target dots in them. Makes it a little tough to do precision work on paper.

Great job guys and gals, keep them barrels warm!!

I knew that was a rough round, but damn!

Thanks Jason for putting this on and for the support to AS.org. Shout out for the sponsors as well, who without I may not be so willing to make a fool of myself.

Sent funds for the new year as well.

Once again, a great match and a great year. Thanks to Jason, the snipers, and the sponsors of the match. I was able to shoot all of the matches this time around. Obviously, my centerfire needs a little work, but I am glad that I shot and turned in every match. Now I have a baseline for improvement. I was so close to shooting a 235. I missed the 30 point target by a fraction of an inch. Oh well, one of these days my tin cupping will pay off.

thanks again for fun match. im slowly getting better, but have a ways to go to compete with the big dawgs!

and thanks to the sponsors, dont know how many of them read this thread, but it really does mean alot!

i will always order from the sponsors if they have what i need
