I am back on the road working and living in my 21 foot travel trailer . I am looking for a small to medium breed dog that doesn't shed a lot , is not prone to being a yappy little pile of fur and doesn't need 40 acres to run and play . I have a 3 year old Yellow lab and a 14 year old Black lab at home but neither one travels real well thus my search . Any help is much appreciated .

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

We have owned several Heeler's , both red and blue in my lifetime and most needed a lot of room to roam . Bulldog might fit the bill though . May need to make a trip to the pound this weekend just to browse the castaway crew .

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

get a real dog. Nothing under 30 pounds constitutes as a real dog. I would suggest a pitbull. Get him as a pup though, and forget the stereotypes.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

American Staffordshire TErrier or American Pit Bull Terrier. Both are easy to train with a little 20 minute a day dedication, and also very smart. The best part is they don't yap all day long, just hang out and look. When you have the heart of a lion, the courage of a Wolverine, and the stoicism of a Tin Soldier, you don't bark unless it is absolutely really required because you know you have nothing to prove. Just make sure you provide plenty of good bones(rawhide sucks unless you put peanut butter in it), a can of tennis balls every six months, and lots of those crunchy doggie popcorn treats, oh, and we eat Blue Buffalo chow because it let's us know you care for our health. Oh and those polymer bones, you know, the ones that say 'Aggressive Chewers' not the little candy ass ones for those little yappy dogs that have a hard time chewing milk toast. WE make sure that what is your's stays your's when you are out too

Don't overlook the mutts. We got Willie (about 38#) through TEARS when he was about 8mos old. Some one picked him up after seeing him thrown from a car window. He's a great dog with a wonderful personality and seems truly happy to be here. Funny thing is, that as rough as his life apparently started out his favorite thing to do is go for a car ride.

The one thing about a mix is you don't really know how big they'll get when they are puppies. My buddy got a Husky looking mix about the same time we got Willie. That little dog's feet were huge... I just knew he'd get big. He ended up about an inch taller then Willie and about 50#.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Bulldogs , Pitt Bulls and the like are just way too big for the trailer . The Corgi is looking like about the right size so far . Think in terms of a dog spending 10-11 hours a day by itself in a 21X8 camp trailer while I am at work . Anything over about 40 pounds is gonna be way too big . 20-30lbs without a lot of shedding would be about right . If I wanted something bigger than that I would buy another Lab as that is all I have ever owned .

Thanks for the ideas guys .

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Rat Terrier, and the smaller sized Dobie are both good and easily trained as well, however the Dobie has the edge on keeping your stuff your's. A decent medium sized dog with heart will intimidate any scumbag from trying to take your things. 60 pounds is about the upper weight for a medium breed. As to shedding hair, all but one or two breeds shed.
I and the rest of the family have been very impressed with Bulleit's total lack of fear for stuff(well, except Panty 6's vacuum cleaner). He will even challenge much larger Pit's and Staffie's and counter their play attacks by going underneath them.

The other breeds we considered were:
Medium Sized Doberman
Dog de Bourdeaux(medium sized mastiff)
American Pit Bull
Siberian Huskey

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

First let me say that until I met this little sausage with stocky legs, I FRIGGIN HATED CHIHUAHUAS!! But I have to tell you she is smart, attentive, makes a great companion, is incredibly alert and she just hates the hell out of cats.

They are happy to travel and love to sleep too.
She isn't one of the little crack head mini/toy dogs. This critter weighs a full ten pounds and thinks she weighs 100.

Westies tend to bite and they are notorious for yapping and not shutting up. Personally I would rather have a friggin cat around before I would have a westie.

Beagles are hounds. They stink right after you wash them.

Corgies are full sized dogs with stumpy legs. That means full sized turds and lots of dog food to make the turds. They generally do not get along well with other dogs.

If any dog is going to be alone 11 hours a day, you don't want a big dog crapping on your floors...

Just my 10 cents worth

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

I've had two Hungarian Kuvasz, and they are huge dogs. Your home and area is secure, when they are on duty. There are detriments though, such as travel and whatnot.

Hence why we now have a couple of Chihuahua's. If you have them from young pups, they are whatever personality you are. They are not yappy, they are not timid, and they are not shy.

Don't get "granny's old dog" as they will have all of granny's traits, and I'm betting none will fit yours.

Seriously though, I've ridden many a mile on my scoot with one or both tucked into my vest, or the "bag-of-giggles" and they get totally pissed with me whenever I leave them behind.

They travel very well, and they totally believe they are part of the family. We all know that, but when THEY do, it's another echelon attained.

They are not second-class, as I used to think also. To which, I'd agree with Mike Casselton, above.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

yeah, uh..... pits and any kind of cattle dog like the heelers will drive you nuts in the camper....rhodies are huge..

I vote for the most bad assest dogs in the world.....a miniture dachshund... not only are they tactically compact and aerodynamic, they have the attitude to match. Most dont know that dachshunds were originally bred to kill badgers...and that takes some badassery.

But wait there's more. They are not only the ninjas of dogs...they have the heart to match. Never will you see something so small produce such love and affection. They are usually a one person animal.

They do have the rep for being noisy, however, I think that has more to do with how they are raised. Despite getting along fine with other dogs, their company may instill bad habits. The mother of the little pup we have now hardly ever barked until she got contrary at her old age. She has since been put down...but her son is just as quiet, only barking when the other bigger shits get him going.

Dont know if you had a bad experience with them, but mines is nothing like that. He barks when needed and just lays around looking out the window when not needed. He barks not yapps.

The breed was used to hunt fox and badgers and you can actually pick them up by there tail.

Also there are considered non shedding.

I have no idea why but I can't stop laughing at that entire post. You had me rolling at "badassery"

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Never had a little dog til this past Dec., after I lost my 11 yr. old Rot, Thor. In Missouri you can use a leashed dog for blood trailing wounded deer, so with a few searches on the net, I adopted a Rat Terrier/Jack Russel mix. This little dude is smart, loving, yet absolutley vicious and relentless for his size. Not to mention, apparently up to the task, as his training is going very well.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Wife had a corgi when we met, it is now with her mom, they are cool dogs but shed really bad, not much for a guard dog, she may lick someone to death or kill them from exhaustion after a round of fetch.

I have a 4 year old heeler female right now that i love, she is my second heeler not nearly as good as the first but that is my fault, lack of time to train, i let up just as she started working cattle.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Biggest problem with working dogs is they need to be worked or they will drive you nuts. Not to mention lack of exercise affects their health in a very bad way.

jack russels are like a squirrel on crack... Ain't that the truth

Westies may be adaptive to their owners too. My experience with them (8 or so) they do take on the personality of their owners. My ex-laws have them and I hated the little shits long before I divorced their nutty/nasty daughter. I also tend to dislike dogs that have pouffy hair. Yorkies, poodles and their like.

That's funnybthatvyou say that about the corgi, my two lads, they know that there is a stranger there before the stranger knows he is there. These things will let you know that there is a person 1 k yards out. Corgis are great dog, yes they shed but they are worth it. It's also great fun watching them heard the kids.

Re: Small to Medium breed dogs

Michael N, or anyone looking for a dog.A good source for dogs is Petfinder.com. They have any dog breed you can think of in your area. You can search for the parameter that you want. Most of the animals will be fixed, chipped, and have most of there shots for less than any pet store or private breeder. I have a American bulldog/Lab she is my 2nd one,(RIP LiL Bear)got them both from petfinder. She is about 55lbs and is a dream, calm, relaxed but put a squirrel in front of her and goes nuts.

Storm, what storm?
And yes, the blanket is a testament to the level of heart this guy has

Pure bred rescue all the way. Bulleit gave us a hell of a scare yesterday. Couldn't move, back legs appeared to be paralyzed. Then we figured out what happened. He was running on the wood floor, got sideways and wiped out. Musta strained something but he's good to go today.

I think he deserves a female playmate so I am going to be looking for a suitable female to give him a team mate to defend the house and home
