good afternoon,
what would a good (hunting) replacement for a 168gr SMK be? my rifle shoots the SMK great but I would like to find a bullet that I can hunt with with the same flight characteristis. my rifle is a savage with 1/10 twist and the load i am using is 43.2grs of 4064. any info would be helpfull.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: smk replacement?

I have shot the Sierra 165 hollow point boat tail in my savage Mod. 12. At 100 yards I can't tell it from a 168 SMK. I also killed a deer with one last season with my 30-067 BAR and at 190 yds. it was DRT.

Re: smk replacement?

I have killed deer with both the 178 A-Max and the 165 BTHP the 165 hits like a hammer. It works for me and it accurate I have taken deer out as far as 400 yards. Not "Really" far for those in TX or other Western states but a decent range for the North East.

The 178 A-Max impressed me destroying a nice 6pt buck this year. I'm planning to use them if a Hog hunt in TX works out.

I use 43.5 gr of RL15 in a LC case for the 178
42.2 gr AA2520 with the 165 BTHP

Re: smk replacement?

The 165gr SGK is Sierra's own recommendation as a hunting replacement bullet for their 168gr SMK. I would take their advice and just keep on truckin'.
