Smooth barrel nut for Savage

The new Savages come with a smooth barrel nut that look so much better than the old barrel nuts. I called Savage this morning to find out if they are available for purchase and if they will fit older non Accustock models. The answer was no and no.

Does anybody make a similar smooth barrel nut for the older Savage rifles? I know SSS makes a wrench for the new smooth barrel nuts. If nobody does make one, someone should, because I know I would buy one real quick like and in a hurry to replace that ugly barrel nut, and I'm sure many feel the same.

I like the old 'ugly' barrel nut.

It lets me say, "Yes I just kicked your ass with a Savage!" without saying a word

Most barrel makers are now making savage barrels specially to NOT need a barrel nut. I have no experience with such but you could try one next time you rebarrel.

Good Luck

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

A smooth nut defeats half of the purpose of having a nut on there. They may look nicer initially but then there is nothing to grip the nut with unless you have a die that matches the nut and can put a lot of pressure on the nut while it is being rotated.

This is apparently a move to improve the looks of their rifles but I'm thinking it's going to hurt the sales that are specifically for buying their actions. However, tools can and will be made to remove them and eventually install them without leaving a lot of marring.

I like the old "ugly" nut too. Versatility is a thing of beauty.

I hear ya, and I know the Savage performs great. I'm not denying that. In the past I put a call in to Krieger and found out that they would ditch the barrel nut altogether. I am not interested in doing that, as I like the function of the barrel nut, just not the looks.

I have a Savage 110 DL made sometime in the 70s, and it has a smooth barrel nut, which I won't need shortly, PM me if you're interested. Didn't realize it was an uncommon thing.

Negative Ghostrider, the smooth barrel nut has a circular divet on the bottom, for a spanner wrench. No die or massive amounts of pressure required.

On the contrary, my dear sir. Once you've fucked up everything there is to fuck up, you suddenly find yourself in a state of enlightenment!

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

Smooth barrel nuts suck.
My Dad had a Savage with a smooth barrel nut, bought the special smooth barrel nut wrench just for it. Ended up using a pipe wrench to get the nut off and replaced it with a regular knurled barrel nut.

I don't know why you can't replace a knurled nut with a smooth one since the converse is true.
Same threads, same diameter.
i would not recommend it though.

PM me if interested in my Dad's wrench.

Where's that circular divot that was talked about?

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

Even if it does have a circular divot (similar to a castle nut, I am assuming) I don't see how you could get the thing off, if it was assembled at the factory. After maxing out my torque wrench changing barrels (180 LBS/ft) I had to cut the barrel nut off.

Is 180 lbs/ft the torque spec for the barrel nut?

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

No, about 45 ft lbs.

The problem is that the blueing salts get down into the threads and act like "thread locker".

Many times (but not always) you can help to alleviate this by standing your rifle on the butt and putting Kroil around the top of the barrel nut so it seeps down into the threads. Do this a couple of times over a few days before attempting to remove the barrel. Just remember to degrease the barrel nut before putting the wrench on it.

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

I'd have to say this thread really goes with what I've said about Savage all along, "They put the money in the rifle where it needs to be. Any money left over, they paid someone to make it look ugly" -me

Now, they've gone and paid someone to make life difficult too!

Re: Smooth barrel nut for Savage

Difficult but not impossible, I would still rather deal with the little things like barrel nuts being difficult to remove than take my chances on a gunsmith I don't know, and paying more in the long run anyway.

That sounds right, it just may take more than 180 lbs/ft to break the damn thing loose. I can see why some may hate the smooth nut, especially if their rifle came that way from the factory.

If I were to change mine out, I would use anti seize before I torqued the nut to 45 lbs/ft.
