I have a 338Wm Ruger Hawkeye stainless steel rifle that grabs copper like crazy and was wondering what is the best way to smooth up the bore to cut down on copper fouling.

On factory tubes that copper heavily after being broke in; I've found that Tubb system works pretty well on just about all of them

I would like to know more about the Tubb's system since all I've read about fire lapping is that it is a NO NO and should not be done except as a last measure to keep form screwing on a new tube.

Fire lapping should not be done on high end end barrels because they pretty much not need it.

Fire lapping is almost a must on mass-produced factory barrels as they are hardly ever lapped and are full of tool marks. Your rifle falls in this category.

If you want to learn more about Tubb's system, head on over to his website. There are pretty good user instructions on there.

From first hand experience I can tell you that his system flat out WORKS.

BTW, he has two systems: one for lapping new barrels, and one for throat maintenance. You want both. Use the lapping system (Final Finish) first, then apply the throat maintenance system as indicated in his instructions throughout the life of the barrel.

Thanks for the reply and I plan on giving it a try.
