Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

SN-3 = American product built to take a beating an last with any option or reticle you want. Plus, most excellent, customer service.

A guy I know had a SS and I looked thru and shot it once,... my eyes, my eyes,...

I own 3 SN-3's and I am the cheapest SOB you'll ever meet, but I know you will pay for something either up front, or on the back side. The back side is always,... always,... did I say always, more money. YMMV

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

I have always thought if you can afford it buy it

I have 2 SN-3s and will probably never go to a cheaper scope. I have 1 rifle that I'm waiting to save enough to put another USO scope on it

Yours specs are the exact way I have mine except 35mm

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

I have two SN-3's. They have served me well from target shooting to hunting. The bonus with buying a USO is the fantastic customer service.

I also have a build in progress that I am trying to save up for in order to purchase another SN-3. I've tried a few of the different upper end optics and I am sold on USO.

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

Just depends on how far you want to shoot, with the erector adjustment alone. All of mine have 30mm tubes an 1/2 IPHY EREK's, there's between 57 an 59 IPHY usable depending which set up. All have 100yd zero's. The bulk of my shooting is done with the (MDMOA) reticle's only so, until I need more than 40 IPHY I never touch the EREK anyway. If I need to go long I'll normally dial 50 up then add the rest with the reticle. Should I "Need" more than 97 IPHY for the .308 I might think about switching sticks. Same with the 300wm or the other one. Plus depending on where you zero in your reticle, you may get another 20 up as well. Not many real world targets needing 117 + - IPHY(32.5 mils)of up.

Also remember rings for 30mm are everywhere.

Define what you need, then look at what you want, an the realistic target distance your going to shoot most of the time.
Don't get caught up in the Tacticool race.

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

I love my SN-3!

I think the SS is a great value and they did a great job offering high end features in a solid product and kept it affordable.

I'm a big fan of US Optics because of all the reasons others have mentioned. I enjoy interacting with their staff and learning about new features/technologies that they are always working on. I like that they are a family over there not just punching in at the time clock. Great people, great product and they are a huge supporter of the precision shooting community. We all benefit from that!

And the crowd was chanting USO, USO, USO

My SN3....

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

"all around shooting" is a bit of a nebulous term, it may help if you defined that a little more clearly. That said I'll tailor the rest of my response to a lofty definition of all around shooting, ie plinking, hunting, long range out to say...1k yds.

There is no doubt that the SN-3 is a great great scope. And by the general consensus here is a better scope than the ss. But to answer your particluar question more specifically; Yes, the ss is good enough for all around shooting. More broadly stated, both of those scopes are PLENTY of glass for all around shooting. Stated slightly different, neither of those options would allow you to ever blame your scope for a poor performance. So depending on what matters to you, you may be entering a function of diminishing returns, but that depends on what you consider all around shooting to mean. It is a bit of speculation on my part, but I don't imagine you would be disappointed in the ss.

So you really can't go wrong either way. You could always flip a coin and if you feel good about the result, roll with it; if you're disappointed in the outcome of the coin flip, then go with the other one.

And a bit of advocacy... the ss line is manufactured in Japan (edge USO) but SWFA is a great company too, they are out of Texas and I have had gotten nothing but great customer service from them.

Re: SN-3 or SS 5-20x50

Sure, the SN-3 is a better scope.

The SN-3 ERGO costs what, $2500 with a reticle and EREK? You have an SS on the way for $1000, buy $1500 in bullets then ask again.

I'd love to have a T-PAL but I've got a SS on the way too and before I have a T-PAL I'll have an HDMR. Money talks, and the $1300 difference doesn't buy that much more.

I'm putting the SS on my hunting rifle, once I get a new F-TR rig built and move my 32BR I'm thinking about doing some tactical shoots with my LSR, and for that I'm thinking of either a H-59 or a Tremor2. I'd love to have a USO, but at close to 3K, I'm not there, the Bushnell is where I'm going.
