hello im looking in getting a sniper kind of rifle i already have a m1 garand and a m1 carbine. i was hearing that the 6mm and 7mm are very good ballistics. i was looking at like making a copy of hathcocks rifle winchester model 70 and a 12x uteri scope. but model 70s are like 1400 dollars.. if you have a know a good rifle or a good round lemme know thanks!

To the OP...WOW...where to begin.
First off, less typing...more searching/reading!! There is a wealth of good information on this site if you are seriously looking to get into long range, precision rifle shooting. Everything you could want to know from quality equipment to training to ammo/reloading and beyond can be found here. Before posting a question like the one you posted, you probably ought to have a good read of the mission of this site, other threads that might apply to or otherwise answer your questions, and then determine if you really want to post something like what you just posted. A link to the search engine is located in my sig line below.
Second, coming on here with your first post and talking about "sniper for long range" use, copying Hathcock's rifle, etc., not to mention the lack of spelling, grammar, puntuation, etc. in your post screams that you are either an immature, socially awkward kid that needs to spend more time studying in school and/or getting laid (if you aren't a kid...no worries...the comment applies to adults too), or that you are in the wrong place on the Internet to be posting a question like this.

Mostly all the above is just their way of saying Hello. Don't let it bother you most are like red headed step kids. Just beat them till they give ya what your looking for! A "sniper kind of rifle" is vague at best. Since you reference GySgt. Carlos Hathcock's Winchester and you have two other milsurp rifles I will assume that you are interested in Military Sniper Rifles. If you think $1400 is a lot of money, then you are in for a world of dissapointment. There are military Sniper Rifle replicas available for less than that (M1903, Mosin, etc) but they are not on the same level as a M70, M40, M40A1, etc.
I hope you are just looking for a scoped bolt action rifle. If that is true then there are piles and piles of posts about good rifles and optics for every price range.
A couple of things to nudge you into the light:
1. A SNIPER RIFLE is a term used to describe a rifle that has been pressed into service to hunt people. If you are not hunting people, it's not a SNIPER RIFLE. Alternately a Sniper Rifle can be a rifle that was designed and intended by the manufacturer for hunting people. See a pattern here?

Go get a 22 bolt action.... practice. If you think 1400 is a lot to spend on a rifle then you really should stick with a decent 22 and glass. Buy up some ammo and learn to be proficient with it.

You are obviously a n00b. But we all were n00bs once. Heres a hint: never ever ever ever use the word "sniper rifle" again...this isnt call of duty. Next, long range shooting is expensive. If you arent ready to spend a couple thousand dollars on a rifle, bases, rings, scope, bipod, reloading gear, ammo, and if youre like me I have to drive an hour + to find a place to shoot go back to playing black ops or go buy and airsoft "sniper rifle".
You say that you have a couple center fire rifles. If so you probably dont need to use a 22 to get familiar with shooting techniques.
About a year ago I wanted to get into precision target/ long range shooting.
I started to find out what I could afford. Here is kinda what my list looked like:

look man. 31 or 13, it dont matter. we have highschool kids on this site that handle themselves better than you. so lets break it down. are you a sniper? in the military or law enforcement? no? ok, there is the answer to a question you never asked or learned. it is not a sniper rifle unles it was issued to you for the task of performing such duties. ok? no matter how closely a rifle is built to resemble a "sniper rifle" its still just that, a copy. everything you asked could have been answered by you reading posts on this forum. anything you could possibly think to ask has already been asked and answered so many times that when the next newb comes in and does it again, he gets what you got. so to put it in a way that you can easily grasp, READ !!!!!! The members here can and ARE very helpful but you need to do your homework too.
I understand you are upset by some of the comments here, myself included. You have shown, at least to me, you have some growing up to do before you can handle yourself in a professional manner and engage most of these boards’ members in conversation.

1400 to spend? I would look at a savage 12fv or similar. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/ in .223 remington to keep the cost of ammo down as much as possible. put a tasco super sniper on it, and learn to reload. that should keep you set long enough to decide if you want to upgrade, or realize that the gun will just sit in a safe and the m1 garand get you all the distance you will need.

dang man, you can get a remington 700 sps tactical for around 500, optics (vortex, millet, super sniper, bushnell 3200) around 200-400, and bipods are pretty cheap.
If you are serious about accuracy handloading is a must.
Heres the rifle I bought.

It shot around .75 moa out of the box, with an hs precision stock it shoots around .5 moa, about .4 moa out of my mcmillan.

this ones barrel is shorter, I opted for the 26 inch barrel because I wanted to get the most range out of it.

If you like military rifles you will be interested to know that all the m40 rifles, and the army m24 are based of the remington 700 action.

If you were going shoot at a paper target at 400yds with ten shots of .308 ammo off the shelf, what group size do you want? Would a 10" - 12" group be good enough for you?
