hey guys got a question on the field craft part of sniper school. do the spotters still go to a known location to spot the students trying to take their two shots. was wondering if the school would ever change the test and put the spotters in an unknown location to search for the shooters.

Re: sniper school

still the same... Wash out rate would be too high if they did that. haha

Re: sniper school

ok i was just wondering,so the locations are unknown to the spotters.

Re: sniper school

Yes,the recruits location is unknown, however the deck is stacked against them, since the spotters know where they will be travelling roughly. If they see something out of the ordinary, they radio a pointer.

Re: sniper school

A better way to do what you are talking about is to do sniper on sniper operations where you put multiple sniper teams in a area and let them look for each other and you have to find and take out each other!!

Re: sniper school

is this sort of test fair, take the spotters to an unknown area and let them find the shooters without knowing where they are coming from.

Re: sniper school

Why you are missing the point. If you can master moving into a area that is heavily watched with the odds stacked against you and you can successfully complete the mission then you will surely be able to defeat a enemy or observer that doesnt expect you coming.

Re: sniper school

i understand where your coming from if the student can evade two spotters 1300ft. away get off two kill shots on the designated target and still not get spotted, they are pretty dam good at cover and concealment.

The spotters are not being evaluated, they are seasoned vets. It is all the better that it works the way it does,if the recruit crawls into position without being pointed out, then he has suceeded,if not,he has learned from his mistakes.Which in this case did not mean the diffrence in life or death.

I will say though that the spotters at Bragg are extremely keen.

Re: sniper school

Stop, take 3 steps to your right. Now kick that stupid son of a bitch right in the ass.

Re: sniper school

we had two 360 stalks where your field was MUCH bigger then the standard and there were three towers in unknown locations and they ended up being a dude at the base of a tree with a E type over his head for milling. those were interesting to say the least considering the towers were at points where they covered each others blind spots, ugh i still remember those like it was yesterday.

No such thing as a fair fight in the real world. Military Snipers aren't training for competition. They can't throw the rulebook down when they get caught.

Combat ain't fair.

There are quite a few of us here who have mastered stalking against trained observers. It sucks, but if you can hide from someone who knows you are there and where you are coming from, then you can hide from someone who doesn't.

Re: sniper school

i understand, the test is the way it is, for a reason no nothing in war is fair even though we have to fight it that way... in combat we may be able to bend the rules a little but never brake them because there is always someone in the back round trying to say what we are doing is wrong.

What happens in the field stays in the field, period. Many played by the rules long ago, and came in second, based on the over all public perception.
No one that ever humped that gig played by the rules ever again, while in other places,... YMMV

Re: sniper school

Keep in mind too, for the Army basic sniper course your observer is also your target. And in some cases during stalks, you were under direct observation at the ORP while you were vegging up.

for the observers it was an advanced target detection exercise. and they were nailing dudes just using standard 7x50 mil-spec binos. And as 18ssp2md said, all they were doing was attempting to talk the walker onto your position or your equipment. We had several guys who were nailed because they left their drag bags out, or even a pair of pruning shears.

Sometimes you got lucky and got the cherry instructor who was just getting started. Or sometimes you got the civilian contractor who's been doing sniping on and off since Vietnam.

It's apparently challenging enough as is, because the first class of sniper school I went through we lost 14 soldiers due to stalks. It and target detection are usually the 2 things that will knock you out of sniper school in the army. Can't speak for the Devil dogs though.
