Nevermind the fact that I was the only one shooting F T/R, or even a scoped rifle for that matter (everyone else was shooting service rifle).

All joking aside, I felt I did pretty good considering I was using Southwest Ammo's run-n-gun ammo (which by my research is 175smk's stuffed into LC remanufactured brass with 42.8gr of Varget, not sure about the primer though) and this was the first time that I've actually shot my rifle in F T/R conditions. The match was a 3x300 on the F-Class reduced targets. I feel that this ammo is a little on the slow side for my rifle, which for those of you that don't know is a REM700 .308 w/ Kreiger 30" 5R in 1:10". The weather conditions weren't bad but the day started out a little cool and damp.

There was a foggy haze the entire time. I found it very interesting that with the cooler temperature and the moisture in the air that when other shooters would fire, their hot gases would float (with the wind) across the course right through my lane and cause a crazy mirage effect for me while looking through my scope. I have the NightForce Benchrest 12-42x56. At first, I was trying to power down to compensate for the mirage. My first string ended up being a 183-4x. On the next string I was able to start picking up on the rhythm of the other shooters on the line and was able to power back up a little and shoot between the blobs of floating gas. I shot a 188-5x on that string. For the third and final string, I had the other shooters rhythm figured out and was able to get into a rhythm myself but by this time the winds were picking up and I was shooting down the extreme left side of the course. There was a nice tall berm down that side that blocked the wind but there was two large openings in the berm that allowed the wind to blow through. That wouldn't have been a big deal except the wind was blowing between 5 and 10 mph and there was absolutely nothing to use to gauge the wind by. I was just shooting blind in those regards. However, I was able to pull out a 190-4x. I'm pretty proud of my scores considering the only matches I have ever shot prior to this was an XTC match at Benning last summer and the event at HardRock just a few weeks ago. Hopefully I'll be able to get my load testing done this week or weekend (I'm looking at you lal357, let you know as soon as possible) and have nice healthy pills for my stick before the next match.

All in all, I feel as though I did pretty dang good considering this was my first match, and only second time shooting a scoped rifle prone from a bipod in my entire life. The only other time was with lal357 at his club's range. Not too shabby for a newbie, huh?

Have you got a mirage shield for your barrel yet?

You are going to need one, esp with a high powered scope.

I never really thought about it till I got to about the 15th shot in my first match last year and the mirage from the barrel was making my picture look like a fishbowl. I noticed that I need to get one for the new barrel last weekend about 10 shots into a 15 shot string at 600.

I picked up an old piece of a vertical blind and put it on with Velcro tabs. I put the fuzzy side on the barrel, not that it matters but the hooks tend to grab stuff. Use at least 3 tabs or it may pop off while you are shooting.

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing something for that, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I will though before too much longer. I guess that I've been lucky that I haven't really needed one yet. The few times that I've shot the weather has been relatively cool and has helped the barrel temps stay down. But I know hot days are ahead so I will be getting one soon.

One of the officers of the club is the coach for the AU ROTC team and invited me along.

Congrats on your first F-T/R match, and especially the score! It's always satisfying to score well your first time out, regardless of how many people were shooting in your class. Hope you had fun!

Take the time to run a bunch of scenarios in JBM, one of the things you'll see is that out to 600 yards MV and BC are factors but much less than at 1000.

Take your 175 SMK:

At 2760FPS (where my leftover 175s over 44.2 Varget from last yr seem to run in my new barrel) at 300 yards you get 12.7 inches of drop and 0.7 in windage per MPH of full value wind, at 2550 you get 15.7 inches of drop and 0.8 inches of wind. That's not enough windage difference to matter(1/3 of a bullet diameter), and shooting with spotters your not living or dieing on your first shot so elevation is not that big a deal as long as your load holds vertical in the 10 ring, which it should considering you'd need over 100FPS in extreme spread to get more than a 3" drop.

Look at the numbers and compare the 175 SMK to say the 185 Berger kicks ass at 1000, but out to 600 the difference is much less and at 2x the price I'm not sure it's worth it, especially for a club match.

For me, these are things that are nice to know. It gets gives me confidence in my loads so there is one less thing to think/worry about when I'm at the range.

Another thing about MV numbers, don't believe anything you see on the boards. Get your data. Either I have the slowest barrels ever made, a chrono that's 100FPS slow or more, or there are some people here with some incredible barrels.

Another note about JBM and Density Altitude, it matters.

If you know your DA (I use a Kestrel) and you plug it into JBM it is amazing how accurate it is. This past weekend I was shooting at 600 with that leftover ammo, my DA was 1750 last time I looked at the 300 yard line, it may have warmed a little before I got to 600, but based on that JBM says I needed 13.7 MOA at 600, I dialed 13.5. Pretty close, less than one click on most scopes, one click off on my eighth min BR. For reference at sea level it calls for 14.1, so that DA stuff makes a difference.

Its a little more $$$ than the Sinclair, but I like the looks a whole lot better:

Scroll down a ways and you'll see the selection they have.

Otherwise I really like the mirage bands that Jason Baney (jb1000BR) used to sell - ~36" of some sort of black fabric backed by mylar with three sets of velcro dots all rolled up in a pill bottle. Works slick, snug it down w/ a few black hair ties so that it doesn't flap around when the wind comes up or get pulled off going into/out of the case. In that respect, much nicer than the 'hard' ones actually.
